Daws smiled. "Thanks, Henry -- for everything."
She turned to the others with a shrug. "I guess we've done all we can for the time being, huh?"

"Yeah." Sid shrugged. "I guess we better get home, see how Vance is doin'. 'Sides, Foxy oughta be servin' lunch soon." He grinned slightly, then sobered. "How much of all this you gonna tell Proteus?"

Daws grimaced. "As much as he asks about -- and as little as I can get away with without straight-out lying to him. The last thing we need is him deciding that screwy moral code of his doesn't allow for us disrespecting a corpse."

"Eh." Sid frowned. "Wouldn't surprise me. So long, Henry."
"Until later," Henry replied, and watched Sid and the two mutants leave.
When Sid, Daws, and Handy returned to Sid's home, they found Alex and Miriam busy cooking lunch.
"Caddy is coming over to check in on Major Vance," Miriam informed Daws. "Personally, I think he just wants some of Alex's cooking--"
"Our cooking," Alex corrected with a grin, coming up behind Miriam to give her shoulders a squeeze. "You're doing a good job of learning everything I know."
Miriam ignored him. "How did things go, Daws?"

"Well enough." Daws replied, taking a seat on one of the kitchen stools. "Henry's got a lead on a body we think we can use for the plan -- and the Spooks aren't being real friendly about it, but I think they'll play along."
She sighed and slipped her fedora off, running her fingers through her hair. "Now I guess it's just a matter of getting Tiernan to buy it."

"He might think anything when he sees the body," Sid murmured.
Proteus stepped into the kitchen at that moment. "What body?"

Daws fought back the urge to grimace and instead settled for a nonchalant shrug. "The one we're going to pass off as yours, so Tiernan'll stop looking for you."

Proteus frowned. "Where did you get it?"

Daws sighed. "We went to Henry Casselton -- you know he runs a mortuary. The body is a John Doe -- killed by an anti-mutant mob last night."

"I see." Proteus dropped his gaze, looking thoughtful. "And you think you can make Tiernan believe it's me?"

Daws shrugged one shoulder. "We're going to give it the best shot we can. Tiernan's not gonna be satisfied until you're dead. We're hopin' that your Spooks can pull off a convincing enough job of acting to fool Tiernan into thinking that you are."

"I see." The shapeshifter folded his arms, leaning against the wall. "I don't like this plan, Miss Dawson--but I don't guess you do, either. And I'm at least willing to wait and see if it will work. If it doesn't, well... I'll do what I have to. But I suppose it might still have bought some time for your boy Vance to get stronger."
At that, he raised his eyes and smiled faintly. "By the way, breakfast did him good, like Handy said. Now that his body's got some fuel to work with--well, I'm no doctor, but I can tell he's healing a lot faster than most people would consider normal."

Daws brightened at the news. "I'm sure glad to hear that. The faster he gets back on his feet, the better -- for all of us, I mean."
There was a knock at the front door then, and Daws glanced over her shoulder. "I guess that'll be Caddy."

"I'll get it." Sid shambled into the living room, peered through the peephole, and opened the door with a grin.
"Hey, we didn't order a clown. The birthday party's the next street over."

"Aw, and here I had my special lineup of card tricks all ready to go, too." Caddy replied with a faux-sulking expression. Then he slapped Sid on the shoulder and broke out into his customary grin.
"How's everyone doing today? You keeping this boarding house of yours in line for a change?"

"Yeah, we're doin' okay. We might actually have a handle on this mess we're in. An' Proteus says Vance is doin' pretty well." Sid ushered Caddy into the room. "You wanna see him first, or have some chow?"

Caddy held up his black medical bag. "Business before pleasure, Sid -- Hippocratic oath and all. At least, I think that's in the oath somewhere. I sorta skimmed the last half before I signed it, to be honest with ya."
Daws laughed faintly. "Nothing keeps you down for long, does it Caddy?"
Caddy shook his head and gave her a rueful smile. "Nope. In this business, I can't afford to let it."
The doctor shrugged and dismissed the subject. "So, I've got a patient here?"

Sid led Caddy and Daws upstairs, and knocked on the door of his bedroom before stepping in. Vance was sitting up again (or still), and eyed them hopefully as they entered.
"I hope you're bringing more food," he murmured.

Caddy smiled. "The chefs are at work downstairs as we speak -- but I wanna check you over before either of us eat."
He sat down in the chair that Proteus had been occupying all night, opening his medical bag as he did so. "So, first off -- how're you feeling? I can give you something for the pain -- it'll make you pretty woozy, but if you want it . . ."

"Eh. That wouldn't be a bad idea." Vance waved a hand slightly. "It hurts a little less when Proteus is here to do whatever he does--but that's not saying much."
