Caddy thought for a moment. "Today's what, Thursday? . . . Well, at the rate he's healing I'd say he'd be able to travel all right by early Sunday -- or maybe Saturday afternoon. That's assuming Proteus keeps up his life-support gig for another day or two."
"Which is assuming that we can pull off this bluff with Tiernan." Daws muttered.

Miriam frowned. "So what exactly is the plan, anyway? Take the body to the Spooks, and have them take it to Tiernan--or have his people pick it up?"

Daws shrugged. "I guess taking the body to Tiernan's would give the Spooks less chance to try anything on their own turf. I dunno if they'd be willing to do that or not."
She frowned. "I'm not sure I trust the Spooks to run the scenario alone. Last thing we need is one of them getting a bright idea to play by their own script."

Handy shrugged. "We got a coupla people could pose as Spooks, just to keep 'em in line. That'd be less risky than hangin' around yourself to keep an eye on 'em, wouldn't it?"

Daws nodded. "Yeah, it would. Tiernan's boys would be apt to get suspicious if they saw me keeping company with Spooks -- especially since I told Tiernan there's not much love lost between the Spooks and me."

"He might have you on hand anyway," Sid muttered. "You're gettin' ta be a regular errand girl fer him."
The phone rang, and Sid got up to answer it. "Hello?... Oh, hey, Henry... Yeah?... Okay, I'll let 'em know. I'll see ya later."
Hanging up, he turned to the table. "That was Henry. Those people ya sent to Mount Vernon got the body without a hitch, an' the coroner over there is sending it to Henry's now."

Daws gave a relieved sigh. "Well, that's one thing that's gone right. Here's hoping everything else will, too."
She glanced sideways at Caddy. "I guess we probably wouldn't get there much before them if we headed out now, huh?"
"Oh, yeah. Right." Caddy shrugged. "I'm ready whenever you are."
The doctor turned to Miriam. "Listen, once I finish up checking things out at Henry's I'll need to head to work. I'll come by again tomorrow to check up on the Major -- but in the meantime, I'm gonna leave some painkiller here. If you don't mind, he can have an injection every four hours or so -- if he wants it."

Miriam nodded. "That I can manage."
Sid shrugged. "I think I'll go along with ya, Daws. If Caddy's goin' to work after we leave Henry's, you could prob'ly use a ride someplace. 'Sides, I've got a few hours before I need ta be at the Club, an' I'm curious how all this is gonna shake out."

Daws grinned. "Sure thing, Sid -- I'm always glad of your company."
