"It wouldn't be so difficult if we could move a few of 'em here and there--but they've got that warped sense of community." Vance scowled. "The very fact it'd be better to split up will make 'em more determined than ever to stick together."
"I can't totally blame 'em," Sid mused quietly. "If I went through what's happened to them today, I wouldn't wanna be split from the people I know an' care about, either."

Daws nodded. "Yeah, me neither, Sid."
She gave a halfhearted shrug. "Well, I guess the thing to do first is to see about gettin' them all rounded back up, find 'em somewhere to stay for the time being. After that . . . we'll come up with something."
She frowned. "I wonder if Cole could be some use to us with this. He's got resources, and he must have contacts. Heck, with the media frenzy that's going on out there, figuring out some solution to the 'Spook problem' would probably be great PR for him."

"We could use all the help we can get," Vance agreed, and gave a frustrated sigh. "I wish I could get out of here and put my hands on this job personally. With the risk of a mutant-human clash, defusing this situation might be the most important thing we've ever had to do."

"Yeah -- if we can do it." Daws sighed and gave Vance a stern look. "But you settle for runnin' things from bed -- for a while yet, anyhow. We need you too much for you to push it too far."

Vance half-smiled grimly. "Okay, mama hen. Just see about getting Ollivard out here to gve me clearance to be moved back into the city."
"Ya want me ta send Miriam up here with some of that painkiller?" Sid asked.
The Major frowned and shook his head. "Not that I wouldn't like it, but I need a clear head--now of all times."

"As clear as your head ever gets, anyway." Daws said with a teasing half-smile. "I'll get Caddy out here as soon as he gets off work. And I'll get in touch with Cole."

"Good." Vance's lips twisted wryly. "And bring me a cigar--without tipping the docs off about it."

"Sure." Daws grinned and squeezed Vance's fingers lightly. "Gotta make sure your lungs are really back in workin' order, right?"

Vance chuckled quietly and nodded. "Keep me informed. I'll see you later."

Daws nodded. "Okay."
She stood and turned to the others with a shrug. "Well . . . I guess we've got some phone calls to make."

The group made their way out of the room and headed down the stairs.
"I know a coupla swells who're... well, kinda closet mutant sympathizers," Sid remarked. "I'll try an' see if they'd be willin' ta put in some charitable donations. Daws, you gonna see if Caddy can come over now? Sounds like the Major'll be a lot happier if he can go ta Henry's an' powwow with his people."

Daws nodded. "He should be off shift pretty quick -- I'll leave a message with Hubert to send him over as soon as he gets home."
She shrugged. "Getting hold of Cole is gonna be trickier. He's been so busy with election stuff anyway, he's hardly in one place for more than an hour lately."

Miriam emerged from the direction of her basement room at that moment.
"Oh, good morning, Daws. Such as it is. I've heard what's happened." She frowned. "If there's anything I can do to help--even with first aid for the injured Spooks--please let me know."

"I'll do that, Doc." Daws smiled wryly. "We're gonna need all the help we can get, really. Things are a mess."
She shrugged and turned for the kitchen, intending to use the phone. "But I guess we'll just do our best to handle 'em, same as always."

Miriam nodded, and turned to the Padre. "If Major Vance is going to be moved to Henry's, I'll be ready to go with him."

Father Rick nodded. "I'd be happy to give the both of you a ride into the City -- make sure you get settled in at Henry's place."
He watched Daws duck into the kitchen with his rear eyes, and gave Miriam a knowing look. "I take it that Daws finally quit lettin' her infernal stubbornness get in the way of things between her and the Major?"

Miriam smiled. "It looks that way. I don't know exactly what they said to each other, but it's come out." She sobered slightly. "I think nearly losing him made her decide to take the chance while she could."

Father Rick nodded and smiled faintly. "Glad to hear it. About time someone besides me had a shot at tryin' to keep her in line."
He shrugged and gestured to the kitchen. "I suppose I'll start callin' around the parish once Daws finishes her calls -- see who I can round up t'provide some temporary shelter for the Spooks."

Miriam nodded, absently rubbing her hands together. "I wish I could do more. Playing nurse to the Major might sound impportant, but he's not the kind to tolerate much help--especially now. I'm sure he won't want much medication slowing up his brain."

The Padre nodded. "I imagine you're right, there." He shrugged faintly and gave her an encouraging smile. "But like you say -- maybe you can give a hand with the Spooks. Everything helps in its way, after all."
Daws chose that moment to return from the kitchen, rubbing the back of her neck. "Hubert's gonna send Caddy over as soon as he gets home. And I left a message for Cole -- though who knows how long it'll be until his secretary catches up with him." She shrugged.
