"What about that policeman, Sergeant Bell?" Miriam asked. "Maybe he'd have some helpful information about what happened--or what's going to happen, as far as the police are concerned."

Daws brightened. "That's a good idea, Doc. Bell hears a lot sittin' at that desk -- he could give us some warning if the cops are gonna start making trouble."

"Oh, gosh, I hope not," Miriam sighed, putting a hand over her eyes. "Things are enough of a mess already."
Sid had gone into the kitchen, but now he returned, coffee cup in hand. "There's breakfast if ya want it," he said to Daws and the Padre. "Foxy fixed it. He went ta take the kids ta school an' do a couple errands, but he oughta be back soon."

Father Rick grinned broadly. "Don't mind if I do. I spent all morning on the phone with worried parishioners -- didn't leave any time to eat."
Daws smiled. "Hey, you know me -- I never turn down a meal."

The group moved into the kitchen, where Miriam started dishing out omelettes. She had clearly been learning her way around that kitchen from Alex.
"What do you think Mister Cole could really do to help?" she asked as she sat down. "It could put him in a tight spot politically if he did much actively to help the Spooks, wouldn't it?"

Daws shrugged. "I guess it depends on how public opinion swings over the next couple days. If anti-mutant sentiment is gonna be on the rise, he's gonna be in a pretty tight spot anyway -- he hasn't exactly made any secret out of how he feels about mutant rights."
She waved one hand faintly. "If nothin' else, maybe he can at least put some of that family money of his towards helping the Spooks without makin' it too public. Maybe he'll even have some idea of what we're gonna do with all of 'em."

Sid leaned his elbows on the back of his chair. "If you can just get 'em rounded up, I'll chip in ta feed 'em for a while. We can fix meals for 'em after hours in the kitchen at the Paragon--'specially if any of the Major's boys'd volunteer for KP. I know Foxy'll wanna help, but I wouldn't want him tryin' ta handle it alone."

"I know we can find people in the parish to take at least some of them in -- the families who have children, at the very least." Father Rick said. "We know how to come through for people who need it."
"Yeah," Daws gestured with her fork, "But like Vance said -- we can't let it turn into a full-time thing. They're gonna need someplace else to go eventually. Once all this dies down." She flinched faintly. "If all this dies down."

"Where else can they go?" Sid queried. "You think that one guy was right, talkin' about how human gangs'd kill 'em if they tried movin' into any new turf?"

Daws shrugged. "I'm just as worried about Tiernan as I am about any other gangs, really. He said the Spooks had 'learned their lesson', but that doesn't mean he won't decide to hit them again if Proteus still doesn't turn himself in. There's no telling what that lunatic might decide to do just for kicks."
"And don't we all know it." Father Rick murmured, with a sympathetic glance at Sid. Then he shrugged his broad shoulders. "Well, what about somewhere besides the City? Would they be willing to try making a new life for themselves elsewhere? That'd get them out of the reach of Tiernan, anyway."

Sid rubbed his face and sighed. "It's almost enough ta make a guy wish he hadn't quit the rackets. Ya know... if I hadn't wanted ta quit, my old Pop-in-law prob'ly woulda turned things over ta me insteada that mook Tony. Woulda helped a lot at a time like this ta have the Comancini resources." He grimaced. "'Course, Tony hates mutants an' me besides--so that's not happenin'."

Daws pulled a wry face. "Yeah, I can just picture how that conversation would go -- what with Tony bein' the pleasant guy he is."
She spread her hands. "Whatever we decide to do isn't gonna happen anytime real soon, anyway. We haven't even got the Spooks rounded up yet, and we can't make a move until the Police ease up their attention some. Not to mention we're assuming that we can even get the Spooks to listen to us, after what's happened."

"Maybe they'll finally be mad enough ta fight Tiernan," Sid wondered hopefully.

"Yeah, maybe." Daws shrugged. "I suppose that's the optimistic view of the situation. At this point, I'll just settle for them not getting together and deciding to turn us over to Tiernan in retaliation for this whole mess."
She frowned at her plate. "I wonder what Proteus is gonna do. I'd hate to think he's gonna still turn himself over -- now that it's too late for it to do any good."

"I wonder if Joey is at Tiernan's today," said Miriam. "It might be a good idea to have him keeping an eye on things there."

Daws nodded. "I suppose it would be -- at least that'd give us some idea of how the Bat's people are reacting to all of this. I'll try to get in touch with him, have him keep us posted if anything else develops over there."

Miriam pushed away her coffee cup. "Well, if Vance is going to be moved today, I should get a few things packed." She smiled wanly. "And think up what I'm going to say to convince Alex not to come over to Henry's ten times a day."

Daws gave a lopsided grin. "Try 'absence makes the heart grow fonder'. It's worth a shot, anyhow."

"In his case, absence makes the heart worry excessively." Miriam smiled and shook her head. "I can't complain. If all of you didn't care so much about me--I'd be lost."

Daws smiled. "The feeling's mutual, Doc."
She stood and gathered up the emptied breakfast dishes. "Okay. Caddy oughtta be here within the hour -- that'll give me enough time to call Bell and Joey."
"And for me to start contacting people in the parish." Father Rick added.
Daws shot Sid a faint, apologetic grin. "Guess this hotel of yours is gonna have a phone bill to match the traffic before all of this is over."
