"Yeah. Or he might take the whim to do something really vindictive and destructive." Vance shook his head. "Well, here's hoping for a few days' quiet. We could all use it. Say, when's the birthday of Rosenstein's kid? I remember him saying something about a shindig at the Paragon Club."

Daws scratched thoughtfully behind her ear. "The first part of next month, I think -- something like the eight or the ninth." She grinned. "I can't wait to see what kind of a party that'll be -- with our crew there."

"I'm amazed the Enforcer'd let his kids around us. You'd think our group would give her the horrors." Vance smiled and shook his head. "A little recreation would be nice, though--if I'm invited."

Daws grinned teasingly. "Oh, I imagine you are -- so long as you promise to mind your manners. No exploding the buffet table or staging tactical strikes on the punchbowl." She chuckled. "In point of fact, I'd be sort of disappointed if you didn't show up. You keep things interesting."

Vance chuckled. "I think that's about the best compliment I could ever expect. And you bet I'll be there."
They had emerged from Spooktown and begun making their way back to his car. "I'll take you back to your office," he said. "After that I gotta go do some big, exciting things involving supply requisitions from my boys. They'll be eating for a month on the cash from the drug dealer we rolled last week."

Daws grinned. "You lead a glamorous life. Keep it up and they'll turn you into a folk hero like that Punisher character from the comics."

"I'll settle for staying anonymous," Vance replied, sliding into the driver's seat of the car. "I'm no hero."

Daws' mouth quirked in a wry smile. "I know one or two people who might dispute that."
She settled into the passenger seat and glanced back at the entrance to Spooktown. "Can't say I'm sorry to be leavin' this neighborhood." she said quietly. "There's a couple guys in there would've had my tail -- or turned it in to Tiernan, if Proteus hadn't told them otherwise." She shrugged and faced forward, shaking her head. "Guess I won't be building a summer home in Spooktown anytime soon."

Vance nodded thoughtfully. "They're an odd bunch. Proteus is even odder. Something weirdly indifferent about him--even to those people who look up to him. I guess when you can be anybody or anything you want to be, other people who are always the same seem a little boring."

"I guess so." Daws frowned thoughtfully. "Y'know, I read an article once -- think it was in National Geographic -- that said shapeshifters tend to live a lot longer than humans and other mutants. Somethin' about the rate at which their cells renew themselves, or something."
She shrugged. "For all we know, Proteus might be a hundred years old -- maybe he just feels like he's seen it all, and doesn't wanna get involved anymore. Who knows?"

"That wouldn't surprise me. Remember that crack about 'playing war is for children'?" Vance shook his head. "If he is that old, I'd hate to know how much of the bad side of life he's seen. I've had more than enough of it in my years. I couldn't blame him for being a little cynical."

"Neither could I." Daws shrugged. "Like I told him -- I honestly hope nothin' happens that's bad enough to make him want to get involved -- no matter how useful he'd be to the fight." She sighed, thinking of Sid, and added "Nobody deserves to get that kind of shock."
Then she grinned wickedly. "Except, of course, for our buddy the bat."

"I'll agree to that," Vance murmured.
When they reached Daws' office, the Major stepped out of the car and walked with her to the door. "Let me know if any Spooks show up to do business. With nothing much going on, I should be pretty close anytime you need me."

Daws smiled. "I'll keep that in mind -- and I'll let you know. If nothin' else, I'll see you at Tara's birthday."
She grinned and tossed him a casual salute. "Take care of yourself out there, hero."
