Caddy grinned. "Yeah, we're gettin' along famously. He's had a couple rough days, but . . ." He shrugged good-naturedly. "Well, a couple sleepless nights talkin' over some good coffee, and we might as well have grown up together -- we get along so well."

"I couldn't be more amazed," Vance remarked. "That stuff we used to turn him musta done something to his brain."

Caddy grinned and shook his head. "Maybe. Or maybe he was just waitin' to find a niche. We've done a lot of talkin' about the guy he used to be, and well . . ." He shrugged. "I never woulda agreed with him, but I can understand what it was that made hiim that guy."

Vance squinted his good eye at Caddy. "I can't."
Before the conversation could begin to take on a disagreeable tone, Handy swiftly interjected himself. "Hey, Jerod, you think maybe it'd help the Docs if they could test their stuff out on some of our guys?"
The Major glanced at his sidekick, then shrugged and looked up at Caddy. "We could do that, if more testing would be useful. I could send over Torch and a few other boys."

Caddy nodded. "I'll see what Hubert thinks, but I think that'd probably be a help, yeah." He grinned. "The nice part about this stuff is, it's not too terribly hard to synthesize -- or too expensive. Not that I'd recommend taking it by the gallon or anything."
Hubert chose that moment to return, bearing Daws' fedora and trenchcoat. He handed them to the detective with a smile.
"Thanks, Hubert." Daws grinned lopsidedly as she pulled on the coat and settled the hat on her head. "Don't feel quite like myself without these."

"You don't look quite like yourself without 'em either," Vance quipped. "I guess we'd better get going. Thanks for the headsup on all this, Docs. I'll call you and set up a time to send the boys around."
He turned to Daws. "Okay, ladies first."

Daws nodded, shook Hubert's hand, and cuffed Caddy's shoulder affectionately. "You two keep up the good work, okay? And try not to blow the place up."
"Awwww, but Mom . . ." Caddy protested.
Hubert rolled his eyes. "We'll see the two of you around. Take care."
Daws nodded and led the way out of the house. She smiled at Vance as the trio emerged onto the sidewalk. "Well, that was certainly an educational trip."

"Very." Vance paused in lighting a cigar and smirked at Daws slightly. "You know you're piling up quite a collection of stuff you'll never live down."

Daws pulled a face at him. "Whoever you're thinking of spreading stories to, it won't work. I'll just deny anything you say." Her eyes sparkled teasingly. "Which one of us looks more trustworthy, you or me?"

Vance grinned darkly. "If the choice is between you and me... I'd say Handy." He chucked a thumb at his partner, who was looking at them with an expression of mild consternation.

Daws grinned. "Sure, sure. So long as he's not looking over a hand of cards, anyway."

Handy shook his head resignedly. "I don't get it... I just don't get it."
"We'll explain it when you're older." Vance cuffed Handy on the shoulder and started down the front walk. "Come on, let's take the lady home."
