Nate blinked, surprised. "You can do that?"
"Jai can do pretty much anything that has to do with false information." Vance smiled crookedly at the mutant hacker. "And of course, that's why we're here. Our beloved mayor has shot his mouth off about himself to Tiernan, and ended up putting his sister on the spot. We think we have a chance at satisfying Tiernan's curiosity without getting Cole dead--but he wants us to take his sister out of harm's way in the meantime. And since we don't want to let on to the Bat that we know she's in danger..." He paused for a breath. "We want to make it look like she's just gone to meet a friend from the internet."

Jai raised an eyebrow in mild surprise, and then chuckled quietly. "I see. Yes, I can certainly do that." He glanced at Daws. "Her name and address would be helpful."
Daws grinned and fished her notebook out of her pocket, scribbled Marla Cole's name, address, and telephone number, and tore the page off and handed it to Jai.
The hacker nodded and flipped his long braid of black hair over his shoulder. "Excellent. It may take a little delicate work, particularly if she has her computer firewalled, but I can build a record of e-mails and instant messaging conversations." He glanced inquisitively at Vance. "When were you planning on taking her away?"

"The sooner the better--but not so soon that the Bat gets suspicious about the timing." Vance frowned. "This week. Tuesday. A weekend might have looked better, but this one's too soon, and the next one is too far off to risk."

Jai nodded. "All right. I'll make all the 'arrangements'." He frowned thoughtfully. "You may want to have Mister Cole let his sister know what I am doing, though. It would hardly do for her to raise a fuss over e-mails she didn't write appearing on her computer -- Tiernan might catch wind of that."
Daws nodded. "She'll need to know about this whole plan anyway -- I'll make sure Cole mentions that part of it, too."

"Try not to be specific about where they're going, either," Vance added to Jai. "We're going to see if Sid Rosenstein can borrow a rich patron's summer place or something, but we haven't talked to him about it yet, so we don't know where.
"Also," he grinned sideways at Nate. "For your information, Nate here is going to be the babysitter."

Jai grinned and nodded. "All right, Major. The destination can be a 'surprise'." He glanced at Nate. "And good luck to you."

"Uh... yeah." Nate grinned wanly. "A blind date with a telepathic recluse who a genocidal psycho wants to kidnap. I think I'm good to go."

Veeru laughed. "There's never a dull moment, my friend."

"Clearly you've never done KP duty for Dad's people," Nate retorted.
Vance grinned flatly at the Twins and shrugged. "He's still getting over the idea that he's still a rookie as one of us, even if he is a trained soldier."

Jai smiled crookedly. "We must all start somewhere, yes?" Then he winced slightly and pinched the bridge of his nose. "And if there's nothing else you need, Major Vance, then I will start putting together your false conversations for Miss Cole."
"The light gets to him." Veeru explained for Nate's benefit.

Vance nodded. "Okay. Thanks, Jai... Everybody out," he added, herding Handy and Nate toward the door.
"Nice meeting you," Nate called hurriedly over his shoulder as he was hustled out.

Jai smiled crookedly. "Likewise." He called back, already settling back into his usual cross-legged position.
Veeru flicked off the lights and pulled the bedroom door partway shut behind him as he followed the others back into the living room. "My brother is not much for social settings, I'm afraid." He said half-apologetically.

"That's understandable," Vance replied. Then he gave Veeru a dubious look. "And how about you? Not going and breaking any more bones lately, are you?"

Veeru grinned a bit sheepishly and shook his head. "No, nothing like that."
From Jai's assortment of speakers came a sound that was unmistakably a throat being cleared. "Is that so?"
Veeru pulled a face. "Brother, you are a busybodied kaminay even without your body."
He shrugged broadly. "I haven't broken any bones, but I did cut my shin rather badly at work last week." He admitted with an unconcerned tone. "An honest accident -- it could have happened to anyone."

"Yeah, anybody who's not in touch with their nervous system," Vance retorted, with a shake of his head. "Just try to remember you're more useful to everyone--especially your brother--alive instead of dead."

Veeru sobered quickly and nodded. "Believe me Major Vance . . . I always do remember it. I do my best . . ." he grinned crookedly. "Even if it doesn't always seem like it."

"Yeah." Vance clapped Veeru on the shoulder. "Well, call us when Jai has his end of our little project lined up. Then we can get onto Cole and set the rest of it in motion."

"With this whole new resistance gig, or just the blind date?" Nate retorted with a feeble grin, pumping Veeru's hand.

Veeru's grin turned slightly wicked. "With whichever of the two you need the most luck, of course." He chuckled and turned to grasp Daws' shoulders. "You be careful out there, D."
"And you call Jai the busybody." Daws grinned and squeezed Veeru's hands. "Don't worry, V. I'm always careful."
