Marla and Nate had arranged for her to return home in the early afternoon of the day after her brother's meeting with Tiernan. Her brief time in hiding hadn't exactly been unpleasant -- but, she reflected as she tucked the last of her clothes back into her suitcase and snapped the latches closed, it would be good to get back to her own house and her old routine.
At least, she was mostly sure it would be good to get back to her old routine . . .
She shoved that train of thought away and hefted her suitcase, carrying it out to the living room.

Nate grinned at Marla as she came into the room, holding out his hand for her suitcase. "I'll take that. My stuff's already in the car."
Then he glanced around the living room a bit wistfully. "I'll kinda miss this place. I can't say it isn't better than our underground hideouts back in the city." He shrugged. "I'll be glad to get back to work, though."

Marla smiled crookedly and tucked her hair behind her ear. "Yeah. Um . . . thanks for, y'know -- for a nice couple of days. And the protection and everything."

"Just doing my job." Nate grinned as they headed for the front door. "Kind of a nicer job than usual, actually."
Outside, he turned to lock the front door, then pocketed the key. "I'll have to give this back to Sid... Okay, let's head out." He went to the car and opened the passenger door for Marla.

"Thanks." Marla slid into the car and reached to buckle her seat belt. "I just hope Marcus hasn't had a nervous breakdown not knowing where I've been for three days."

"He couldn't afford to have a nervous breakdown," Nate said grimly as he put his key in the ignition. "He had to meet Tiernan and sell him on the idea that he's only an empath. If he couldn't pull that off... well, here's hoping we're not going to walk into trouble."

Marla worried her bottom lip between his teeth. "I sure hope not. That man frightens me enough without him knowing what Marcus can really do."
She shrugged and smiled thinly. "Well . . . Marcus always was the actor in the family. I'm . . . I'm sure it all went fine."

"Well, there's no panic in the streets, at least. My dad would have called if he knew there was any danger." Nate grinned slightly at Marla. "Of course we didn't give your brother the address or phone number. We needed him to focus instead of thinking about running down to check on you."

Marla grinned crookedly. "That was probably a good call on your part. I don't think he could've stood it without coming down here otherwise."

Nate shook his head wryly. "I think I would've bashed him over the head with something by now if I were you."

Marla laughed. "You've never tried sneaking up on someone who can hear what you're thinking, I take it."

"I wouldn't figure that would stand much in the way of a woman's wrath," Nate retorted with a grin. "Not that I know much about women's wrath. Or women, period."

Marla smiled. "Not a lot of women in your resistance, huh?"

"Uh--not my Dad's part of it, no. There's more in the group from Father Steele's parish, but we still don't really mix that much. For security mostly, I guess. Tiernan knows quite a few of our guys, and he's after them--so those civilians don't need us decorating the neighborhood. They've got enough problems of their own."

"I guess so -- especially with all the turmoil after the election." Marla pushed her hair back from her face. "I . . . I certainly hope that sort of thing is going to stay settled down. The news broadcasts were a little frightening for a while there."

"The way I hear it, the streets were pretty frightening for a while there." Nate shook his head. "Dad and some of the other guys went out and did kind of a guardian-angel act that night. I hear they saved a lot of mutants from getting roughed up--or worse."

Marla shook her head. "I don't think Marcus really understood just what he was starting when he ran for office. I can't imagine what would have happened if the public knew he was really a mutant."

"Heaven help us," Nate murmured. "And that's exactly why we're so worried about Tiernan's finding out. Personally, I can't see how he'd be crazy enough to use it against your brother publicly--but the key word there is crazy. Who knows what he might get it into his head to do."

Marla bit her lip. "I don't know what Marcus would do if that happened." She said, frowning worriedly. "He's not really safe now, but if people found out that he's a mutant . . ." she shivered.

"Well, plenty of people like us have to live with that," Nate replied, gently but bluntly. "I didn't know how I'd handle it before Tiernan got wind of me--but I've learned. The most important thing is knowing who to trust..." He smiled crookedly. "And your brother's power ought to help him there, I'd guess."
