"Oh, he's awake, alright." Proteus stepped back to let Daws into the room. "I'll stay long enough to hear about how your plan went, and then I'll leave you alone."
Vance smiled as Daws came in. "Evenin'. How are things?"

"Oh, not too bad." Daws replied, settling into one of the chairs by the side of the bed and balancing her plate on her lap.
"Our guys got the body without any problems, and Henry and Caddy both checked it over," she explained. "Then the Spooks and a couple of your boys took it around to Tiernan's. He called me in to ask if I'd ever seen the guy before," she shrugged, "And that was about it."

"Uh-huh." Vance frowned. "I'll be kind of surprised if that's the end of it, though. Did he say he was going to do any tests on the body?"

Daws sighed and toyed with her fork. "Yeah, he did. Just what kind of tests he's thinkin' of -- and if our corpse will pass them . . ." she shrugged. "That I don't know."

"Yeah." The Major glanced at Proteus. "Mind if we have some time alone now?"
For a moment it looked as if the shapeshifter might protest or question further, but then he frowned and nodded. "Alright," he agreed reluctantly, and retreated from the room.
Once the door closed, Vance turned to Daws. "If Nocturne doesn't like the answers he gets, the Spooks might not be out of danger."

Daws grimaced. "Yeah -- the bat said as much himself."
She shook her head. "I went back down to Spooktown to warn them -- and to try and get 'em thinking about the possibility of clearing out before Tiernan gets a chance to come in swinging. But you know the Spooks." She gave a frustrated sigh. "All I got for my troubles was a lot of dirty looks and a speech about how Spooktown is all they've got that's worth fighting for."
Daws frowned at her dinner plate. "I'm worried. Maybe we've got nothing to worry about, and the tests will clear just fine -- but if they don't, then those people are gonna be in a lot of danger -- and if they're not willing to get outta the way before that happens . . ." she trailed off with a shrug.

Vance spread his hands slightly. "I'd be willing to help get 'em out of harm's way for a while, if I could--but it's enough of a challenge just providing for my own. We've got no place for their whole little colony, even temporarily."

Daws sighed. "Same thing on our end. I mean, most of the people in the parish do all right -- but it's not like anybody's just got a mansion sitting empty or anything. Besides, if they relocate in a big group to some other part of the City, I don't think that Tiernan would have that hard of a time finding 'em again, anyway."

"Yeah." Vance's skin was still practically layered with bruises, but he gingerly folded his arms over his chest. He half-closed his eyes, thinking.
"If we can't move 'em, and they won't or can't move themselves, we can at least see they've got some added protection. After all, they didn't ask to be involved in this. I'll send as many of my people as I can spare to blend in with 'em--and whatever the Spooks like or don't like, they'll be well armed. If anything pops, they'll do what they can to protect the women and children."

Daws grimaced. "I'm sure Proteus will just love it if that happens." She shrugged. "But then again, I think we've about worn through his patience anyway. No sense fighting it, maybe -- especially when there are people's lives at stake."

"Mm-hmm." Vance sighed, lapsing into thought for a moment more. Then his eye wandered toward Daws' plate.
"That smells good..."

Daws laughed. "Miriam warned me you'd decide to scavenge. I should've brought an extra fork up with me." She shrugged and gestured at the plate. "Well, you're sick -- so I'll put up with it."
With a wicked grin, she added "Once you get feelin' better, though -- keep in mind that a fork can make an excellent weapon if needs be."

Vance chuckled and wincingly scooted himself a little closer, reaching out to help himself from the plate. "Dinner's on me when I get up and around--assuming we're not in the middle of an all-out war by then."

"Yeah." Daws smiled crookedly. "Then here's hoping we can just get back to our everyday covert guerilla war, instead."
She gave a faint chuckle and shook her head. "We're not exactly ever gonna have normal lives, are we?"

"That's the short definition of mutant." Vance gave Daws a fond but slightly rueful smile. "I'm not so sure that's a loss for me. A 'normal' life... eh." He shrugged slightly. "Not that it doesn't sound nice and relaxing, but I just can't see it."

Daws returned the smile. "Yeah . . . probably would be a little too boring, at that."
She shrugged one shoulder and changed the subject. "By the way -- Flash and Roger Latimore both send their best wishes. Rog told me to tell you to take it easy."

Vance gave a good-humored smort, although the look in his eye betrayed the fact that he was moved. "He oughta talk. All he ever does is loaf around the office at his apartment building all day."

Daws grinned. "Yeah, but at least you always know where to find him if you need him, right? Tracking down the landlord at my place is a task even for me -- and I find people for a living."

"Heh." Vance took the fork from Daws and pilfered another bite from her plate.
"You know, I think Foxy and the Doc are the pair who need something more like a normal life. I'm kinda sorry for those two. I've spent a little time trying to think of a way to put 'em in a better situation, but I can't--not short of getting them out of all this. They wouldn't do that until the rest of us do."

Daws shook her head. "Not a chance. They're both too stubborn."
She snagged the fork back with a resigned sigh. "Better to face it -- we're all in for the long haul on this one." Then she smiled faintly. "But y'know -- it's better than being in it alone."
