Daws nodded slowly. "Sounds easy enough." She raised an eyebrow. "You got a photograph or something so we can make an ID on Huber? We're gonna look awfully silly if we end up grabbing some Joe Random off the street in the middle of the night."

"Types like Huber are pretty hard to miss when you're lookin' for 'em, but yeah, I got..." Vance turned to Handy, snapping his fingers, and Handy produced a newspaper clipping from somewhere beneath his coat. Jerod passed the scrap of paper to Daws.
The grainy photograph was of a group of scientists that included Huber. He was a small, balding man with thick glasses, the kind few people would give a second glance to.

Daws examined the photograph closely, then nodded and handed it back to Vance. "Okay then."
She glanced at the other members of the Resistance, then at Vance. "Tiernan's the impatient sort -- he'll move as soon as possible. We should move tonight, if we can -- because if he gets there first, that's it for us getting Huber away from 'im."

"Whadaya want us to do, Daws?" Sid asked, speaking for himself, Alex, and Miriam.
"I think the more important question is where we're going to keep Huber," Miriam added.

Daws ran a hand through her hair and glanced at Sid. "Sid, I kinda hate to bring it up, but . . ." She shrugged. "Well, in your 'old job', did you run across any motels where some untoward activity would go unnoticed?"

Sid frowned, but he didn't hesitate to answer. "The ol' Lucky Motor Court oughta do--an' we won't run inta any 'friends of the family', if ya know what I mean." He rolled his eyes. "Tony called it somethin' else when he said he didn't want his boys doin' any business there anymore."

Daws nodded. "Can you see about bookin' us a room there? We'll need something away from the main entrance."
She glanced at Alex and Miriam. "Honestly, I'm not real sure what else the three of you can do on this one -- unless, of course, you wanna help babysit Huber for the next few days." She grimaced. "Somethin' I know I'm not looking forward to."

"Sure, I'll just sing him some old showtunes," Alex murmured.
Miriam gave him a mildly chiding look, and put in, "We'll do what we can. He'll need food, and that we can see about."
"I'll call for the room," Sid remarked. "I know they had one with real good cover from the road--if nobody's bulldozed the bushes they usedta have."

Daws nodded and turned to Vance. "OKay, then. We're ready to move. Where and when should we meet you tonight?"

"The motel's as good a place as any," Vance replied. "I wanna look the room over before we take our unhappy camper in there. Say about ten-thirty. That'll give us time to put away the breakables before we head out to pick up Huber--and I'm not just saying that because I think he'll put up a fight." Vance smirked. "The drug has quite a kick, they tell me."

Daws flinched -- but squared her shoulders and nodded. "Good enough. We'll see you there." She raised an eyebrow and grinned somewhat viciously. "Looks like we're gonna be seein' quite a bit of each other, Major."

Vance grinned. "Believe it or not, I'm looking forward to the challenge, detective."
He stood up, prompting Handy to rise as well. "I'll have Handy with me tonight. He'll be a help if Huber tries to struggle. So I guess that's it--see ya tonight, kiddies."
With a nod to the group, Vance headed for the stairs, his flighty companion in tow.

Daws shook her head and chuckled wryly. "Well, it's gonna be an interestin' couple of days." She crossed her arms. "It'll be fascinatin' to see whether I kill Vance, Vance kills Huber, or Huber kills both of us before the end of it."

"We'll pick you up at your office about ten," Sid replied. After a pause, he added, "You want I should come packin', or not?"

Daws hesitated . . . and then nodded. "Yeah. I'm gonna be -- probably best you do as well. Little scared guys like Huber don't seem like they'll put up much of a fight -- but I saw one kick the windshield out of a Buick once."

"Okay, we'll see ya then. I gotta put in my appearance at the Club, an' Foxy's doin' his early show. We'll prob'ly have the Doc squirreled away backstage so we can come straight ta you." Sid shrugged. "An' Daws--don't let Vance see he's rilin' ya."

Daws shrugged one shoulder. "Easier said than done, Sid. If all else fails, I'll just switch over to the old plan B -- rilin' him right back." She retrieved her fedora from the chair where she'd left it and nodded to her friends.
"You guys take care of yourselves until then." She glanced over her shoulder at Father Rick, who had maintained his studiously disapproving silence throughout the meeting. "Padre? Do me a favor, willya -- and pray for us?"
The priest chuckled grimly and nodded. "As always. The Lord hears more requests from me for your safety than for the rest of the parish put together."
Daws grinned wryly. "Thanks, Padre." she turned for the stairs, calling over her shoulder to Sid and the others.
"I'll see you all tonight."
