Daws grimaced. "Oh, boy. Bad enough to have Tony around -- you've got to deal with a bunch of his friends, too?" She shook her head. "I don't envy you. Give me good old ordinary poking my nose into other people's business anyday."

"Yeah..." Sid rolled his eyes slightly. "It's got my employees divin' fer the foxholes already. Gracie's sure not gonna be there that night." He scowled. "Tony knows what she is. He tried ta manhandle her in the dressin' room one night a while back--she got spooked an' disappeared. It mighta gotten ugly if Foxy hadn't walked in on 'em."

Daws growled quietly. "Somebody oughtta rearrange Tony's face for him one of these days." She said, flexing her claws. "I'd be glad to do the honors myself if it wouldn't stir up way too much trouble for you."

"I'd do that myself if he wasn't Caroline's cousin... if I hadn't made her a promise about it, a long time ago." Sid shrugged fatalistically. "Havin' Tony around the Club sometimes, I can deal with. It's when he tries ta move in on the kids I got problems. That Sicilian family thing again..." He winced. "He'll intraduce 'em ta the Comancini family business over my dead body."

"Yours and mine both." Daws scowled. "Not to mention Alex and Consuela's."

"Oh yeah. Sometimes I think Foxy's more likely ta call Tony out than I am." Sid chuckled and shook his head. "I may not think much a' how well he can put up a fight, but he's sure got heart."
He smiled ruefully. "I asked him again the other day what chance we got a' seein' him an' the Doc tie the knot sometime soon. I think he'd go for it, but Miriam..." He ambivalently waggled an open hand on the top of the steering wheel. "She's still hung up on the whole fugitive-from-the-law thing."

Daws shook her head. "I wish I could come up with some way to talk her out of that hangup. She deserves to be happy with Alex while she's got the chance -- but sometimes I wonder if she doesn't really believe that."

Sid raised an eyebrow. "Ya mean, with that power a' hers? That maybe she feels like she... well, knows too much about death ta deserve good in life?"

Daws shrugged. "It sure seems like it to me, sometimes. I mean, don't get me wrong -- I'm no expert in emotions by any stretch of the imagination. I guess it just doesn't make much sense to me that she wouldn't want to go ahead and try for some happiness, fugitive or no fugitive."

Sid frowned thoughtfully.
"I dunno... I think she's thinkin' about Foxy. 'Bout the trouble he'd be in if it came out somehow, them bein' together. An' I guess she figures bein' married'd make it harder on him, if--if anythin' ever happened to her." He smiled sadly. "It don't take a weddin' ring ta make love mean everything it means... but she ain't lived enough ta know that."

Daws rubbed the back of her neck thoughtfully. "I guess when you put it that way it makes a little more sense." She shrugged. "Whatever she's thinking, I know none of us have much luck at changing her mind when she's made it up. I just wish she would change it -- for Alex's sake as much as for hers."

"Yeah. Ditto here." Sid sighed. "Though I gotta admit, sometimes I wonder if we ain't all lookin' ta make a rosy story outta the two of 'em just so we'll have somethin' ta be happy about--what's the word? Vocariously?"

Daws smiled crookedly. "Vicariously. Y'know, you might not be all that far off, there." She shrugged, her smile fading a bit. "It's easy to fall back into feeling like we're getting nowhere in this fight, even with what we've done. Maybe we're just trying to pick up on any good thing that's come out of it, y'know?"

"Yeah... I know." Sid looked melancholy for a moment, thinking helplessly of the pain and loss of the underground war. But then he smiled crookedly and glanced at Daws.
"But sometimes we don't gotta look so far," he said, as he turned the corner onto the street where her office stood. His smile warmed as he reached over to pat her shoulder. "Knowin' you is one a' those good things, kid."

Daws grinned and ducked her head. "Thank you, Sid. The same goes for you -- that's one of the things I don't regret about all this, the people I've had the chance to know."

"You said it." Sid pulled up to the curb a block away from the office--always cautious not to let himself be seen with Daws too close to there.
"Well, if nothin' breaks, I guess I'll see ya when we have another regular meetin' at the parish." He grinned haplessly. "I'll let ya know how the Spook thing goes. An' if Joey's up fer a little side job, just tell him we'll talk next time he comes ta see Tara."

"Will-do." Daws grinned and squeeze Sid's shoulder before slipping out of the car. "Good luck with the Spooks, buddy -- you'll need it. And give my love to the kids."

Sid grinned. "I'll do that. We've gotta have ya over fer dinner sometime soon--the kids'd love some more crazy detective stories."

Daws snickered. "If your kids end up romanticizing the detective business, Sid, you'll have nobody to blame but yourself -- but I'll look forward to dinner all the same."

"You got it. We'll make a date fer after I see this whole Lusus thing set up. Take care a' yourself, Daws--so long."
With that, Sid waved a hand through the window and pulled away, turning his car in the direction of the Paragon Club.
