Veeru shrugged and separated out a few stapled-together sheets from the papers in his hand, holding them out to Proteus. "This is the list of 'employees'," He said.

"Mm-hmm..." Proteus leaned his chin on his hand and studied the list in silence.
Nate looked up from his layout studies. "Well, I think I've matched the Mount Bliss setup to one of the mine tunnels." He spread out the two plans for all to see, tracing the matching outlines with a finger. "You can see the shafts are a lot more extensive than it shows on the plan Proteus brought--but that doesn't mean they're using all the shafts."

Daws leaned forward intently. "What d'you suppose the chances are of sneaking in through one of the disused shafts, if there are any?"

"Eh..." Nate rubbed his chin and scowled at the mine chart. "I don't know. It looks like there used to be an access tunnel way back here--" He pointed to a spot on the chart. "But if it isn't sealed off completely, I'd bet it would be protected."

"Might not hurt to keep it in mind -- but I doubt you'll have a second shot at getting into this place." Father Rick said, crossing his arms. "Once they know you're comin', you lose whatever edge you started with . . . so best make sure whatever you try has a pretty strong relative chance of working."

"Maybe a coupla our guys can try the back door while the rest of us go at the front," Sid remarked.
Proteus shrugged. "It's still your best shot to let me try to open that door for you--if you can find me somebody with the key."

"No arguments there." Daws glanced at the shapeshifter. "Any of those names look familiar to you?"

"For what it's worth." Proteus frowned at the list in his hand, and tapped one of the names. "Dorenfeld. Not exactly a common name--but I remember it, or something like it, from one of those vague notes of Tiernan's."

Veeru nodded. "Jai's already trying to run down the people on that list -- I'll have him pay special attention to this Dorenfeld."
"We'd better be as sure as we can be before we make a move." Daws remarked. "Last thing we need is to nab some Joe Smith who never even heard of Mount Bliss."

"I'll do my best to dig around some more," Proteus offered. "This was only what I could get since last night--and frankly, I'm none too good with computers."

Veeru chuckled. "That makes two of us. I leave such things to my brother." He shrugged and leaned forward. "Given a little more time, Jai may be able to come up with more, as well."
"Too bad time's the one thing we don't have very much of." Daws replied.

"Realistically, how much time do we have?" Henry asked.
Vance frowned. "Judging by what Proteus told us last night--at this point I'd say we can't push it any more than two days, tops. And that's including whatever we can do to try to catch and interrogate a guard."
"Well, Proteus and Jai can still be investigating while the rest of us are setting up camp down south, right?" Nate inquired of his father.
"For a while anyway," the Major sighed. "Maybe one more day, but not much beyond that."

Veeru nodded. "I know my brother. He'll make the most of the time he has." He frowned. "Will there be a safe way for us to contact you once you leave the City?"

"My cellphone." Vance took a battered notebook out of his pocket, scrawled a phone number, then tore out the page and handed it to Veeru.

Veeru nodded and slipped the sheet of paper into his pocket. "We'll stay in touch. When are you planning to leave?"

"Well, giving Jai and Proteus another day to try to dig up what they can..." Vance scowled and shrugged. "I'd say about twenty-four hours. After that, we'll have to do whatever we're going to from the base camp we set up down south."

Daws frowned. "Which means we're gonna have to err on the side of haste rather than discretion when it comes to pulling Cole in. Looks like the Mayor's in for another ambush."

"I'll leave that to you," Vance replied. "I've got to work on setting up our logistics."
Sid shrugged. "If ya need some help wranglin' the Mayor, Daws, I'll come with ya."

Daws nodded. "Thanks, Sid -- I'll take you up on that." She shrugged and glanced around the room.
"Have we got anything else right now?"

The resistance members glanced around at each other, and Vance shook his head. "Unfortunately not." He glanced at Veeru. "Tell Jai we wish him luck searching, but this is urgent, and anything else he can come up with might help--"
"And the same goes for me," Proteus murmured. "I know."
