"We've got to hope we can get in and pin the staff down before anyone can reach the destruct switch," Vance replied. "With a smart use of both powers and brains... well, there's a chance, at least. But we can't finalize anything until we've caught and interrogated a guard. We've got to get inside to begin with before we can worry about anything else."

Daws nodded. "Can't argue with that. Once His Honor has the chance to pick someone's brain, I guess we can hash out the fine details from there."

Vance let out a heavy sigh, glancing around at the small group.
"I'll be honest with you. I don't think I've ever gone into anything this big so unprepared--and I don't like it one bit. But we've all agreed that it has to be done. I believe in my people, and in the rest of you; but I can't make any promises about how this is going to turn out. I won't try to. I'll only say that if I can't get every one of you home after this... at least I'll die trying."

Daws rested a hand on his forearm. "That's all any of us can do." She said quietly, looking around at the others. "Whatever happens . . . we're in this thing together."

After a moment of awkward solemnity, Vance shifted his shoulders and stood up restlessly. "Alright, well... I guess we've done everything we can do here. We'd better be on our way south. If there's anything more to learn before we act, it'll be there."

Father Rick nodded and shifted to his feet. "We'll keep in touch if any news comes through on this end. And we'll keep the light on for all of you."

"I appreciate that." Vance shook the Padre's hand gravely.
Roger shrugged. "I'll be waiting for your call. The chopper's all fueled up and ready at the airport, so once I hear from you, I'll get Mister Cole down there fast as I can."

Daws nodded. "Cole's canceled everything else for the next three days -- he'll be ready whenever we are."
She reached into the pocket of her trenchcoat and dug out her keys, tossing them to Father Rick. "Here, Padre. Joey's got the other key to Grimalkin, but there's mine and the key to my apartment. Just . . . in case anyone needs 'em."
The priest nodded solemnly and slipped the keyring into his pocket.

"Okay, then." Vance looked around at the others who would be coming with him. "The rest of my people are waiting for us at an old junkyard outside the city, with all the vehicles and supplies we need. Sid, you can leave your car here--I'll drive all of you over there in my van, and we'll split off from there."
He took a folded slip of paper from his pocket, and handed it to Father Steele. "I think you know my cell number, but there it is anyway--and the address to the abandoned farmhouse we're going to use as our base in West Virginia." He smiled humorlessly. "But if you don't hear from us, it won't be any use coming to look for us."

"Understood." Father Rick spread his hands. "If I was twenty years younger I'd be goin' with you lot, Boyo -- but my prayers go with ya, and that's probably of more use than I'd be now. Godspeed." He surveyed the group with a gruffly protective air. "To all of you."

"We'll be back, Padre," Sid replied firmly.
Vance gave a solemn nod. "Okay, folks. Let's move," he said quietly, and led the group toward the stairs.
