Daws grinned crookedly. "With your luck, Father Rick would turn out to have the twin to the Closet With No End hidden in the back of his office."

Joey looked aghast. "What kind of filing could a church have?--No, wait," he amended quickly, raising his hand. "I don't wanna find out."

Daws laughed as the subway train pulled into the station and she and Joey pushed their way through the crowd to find seats. "I'll admit -- I sort of underestimated how much of that kind of thing there was to catch up on when I asked you to work with me." She leaned back with a wry smile. "Guess I'm going to feel pretty guilty if you have nightmares about filing for the rest of your life."

Joey grinned wryly and shook his head. "It beats doing jobs for Tiernan--and having to hang around with his people." He paused, frowning slightly. "Now it's hard enough just pretending I'm not uncomfortable around 'em."

"I can understand that." Daws said. "This double-agent stuff isn't all it's cracked up to be."

Joey shrugged. "Yeah, I... dunno if I could see myself making a career out of it. I'd have a heart attack sooner or later!"

Daws grinned crookedly. "Well, with any luck, neither one of us'll have to make any kind of career out of it."
After a few more minutes the subway train screeched to a halt at their station, and Daws led Joey out through the turnstiles and up to the street level. "All right," She said, "Like I said before -- we're not gonna get too nosy, here. I just want to have a look around the place, see if we spot anything."

"Sure." Joey nodded broadly. "What other kinds of places are around here? Can we act like we're window-shopping or something?"

Daws shrugged. "Not very easily -- it's mostly offices, I think. We can probably make like we're looking for an address, though."

"Right." Joey fished around in his pockets, and came up with a rumpled scrap of paper that appeared to have a grocery list written on it. "We can use this if we want to look like we're checking the address. Uh--I did some shopping for my mom yesterday." He grinned.

Daws chuckled. "Good enough." She glanced around for a moment, then nodded up the street.
"Okay, the place we're heading for is a couple streets over," She said, tugging her hat down slightly, "And two blocks down."
The pair moved down the street towards their destination, passing by a number of fairly nondescript buildings. Finally, they turned into the street they were heading for -- only to see a black-and-white police car parked across the street two blocks down from where they stood, its lights slowly flashing.

Joey slowed his pace and raised an eyebrow, glancing somewhat nervously at Daws.
"What's this about? Is that the place?"

Daws cocked her head, frowning curiously. "I'm not sure -- but I think so." She glanced at the surrounding buildings, then back at the police car, her frown deepening. "No idea what it's about, though. Not yet."

"What do we do, then?" Joey looked at the police cars and made a face. "Maybe we shouldn't be seen around here..."

"Maybe." Daws rubbed the back of her neck, scowling. "Last thing I want is to get my ribs busted again. But if the police are mixed up in this thing, then it might be a lot more complicated than we think it is . . . and that's pretty need-to-know information."

"Don't you know a guy who's a mutant cop?" Joey asked. "Maybe he could tell us something... Or maybe this is a snooping job for Proteus... I dunno." He smiled wincingly at Daws. "You're the detective."

Daws nodded. "Yeah."
After another moment's indecision, she shrugged. "Not worth gettin' arrested over a dummy corporation's fake office, I guess. Maybe we can just . . . hang on."
She watched intently as a pair of uniformed figured exited the building and climbed into the cop car. The lights were extinguished, and the car pulled away from the curb and started down the street at a slow pace -- heading towards Daws and Joey. Daws grimaced. "Aw, man, it's gonna be one of those days."
She glanced at their surroundings for a moment, then turned with forced nonchalance and nodded down the nearest alley. "C'mon -- we oughtta be able to at least avoid them getting a good look at us."

"Oh, geez," Joey murmured tightly, and then held his breath. Struggling against the urge to look back over his shoulder, he followed Daws toward the alley.

Daws grimaced at the piles of unidentifiable debris littering the alley, but she kept moving with a sigh. "At least there's a couple of doors back here." She muttered, "So with any luck, they won't decide to wonder why we just ducked down a blind alley. Actually, with any luck, they won't have noticed us at all."

Joey winced. "And what do we do if they did?"
