Daws nodded. "Yeah, he'll be there to give Voegel a checkup, and he can stick around if it seems like we're going to need him to."

"We'll have to blindfold Voegel," Vance remarked. "Whatever's gonna happen... well, we don't want him getting a look at Caddy, at the very least."

Daws nodded. "I'll have a word with Caddy on keeping the chatter to a minimum, too." She said. "Usually he knows when to be serious, but it probably can't hurt to remind him -- and his mouth is his most recognizable feature."

"Remind him not to use any of our names while he's at it," Vance added, and glanced around the table. "That goes for all of us. It's code names only around Voegel."
"Uh... 'Scuse me, but bein' just a norm an' all, I ain't got a code name," Sid pointed out earnestly.

Daws grinned wickedly. "I've heard Vance call you 'Enforcer' a time or two." She said. "How's that strike you?"

Sid chuckled darkly and shrugged. "Might as well. What can I do ta help with all this?"
"For starters, what you do best," Vance replied. "Bring some of your first-class provisions around to the motel for feeding times. You're the reason we eat better when we're on a job than when we're not up to trouble."

Daws chuckled. "Sid Rosenstein: guerrilla caterer." She said, grinning crookedly at Sid. "Try putting that on your business cards sometime."

"With my luck, they'd spell 'guerilla' the wrong way," Sid retorted.
Vance chuckled, then shook his head and stood up. "Okay, we've had our comic relief for the night. We'd better head out and start getting everyone into position. Any last details, Regina?"

Daws shook her head. "Not at present. Obviously getting in actual contact with Cole is going to be on our list at some point, but I think we can at least pull off the first part of this whole thing without getting him involved."

"We can't exactly recruit him for combat duty." Vance shrugged and headed out of the kitchen, with the others following. He stopped to face Langston, Beaudry, and Steph.
"We're going now. Langston, thanks for putting up with us. Miss Connors, Mr. Beaudry--if you need anything, say the word, and one of my boys'll come around."

Beaudry nodded, and Steph smiled crookedly. "Thanks, Major Vance."
Langston chuckled. "Don't you worry -- we're doing just fine here."

Vance inclined his head, and led the way out to the two cars in the driveway.
"Nate, you go on with your team," Vance remarked. "The rest of us'll have to be more conspicuous than you. Proteus, Regina, Sid, Handy--we'll take the other car." He tossed his keys to Handy. "You know the spot we staked out across the street from the hospital entrance. We can drop Proteus off and watch what goes on from there."

"Scrambling for clues, scraping together a plan of action on short notice, and then sitting around waiting for something useful to happen." Daws buried her hands in her pockets and grinned wryly. "At least the detective business gave me plenty of practice for this whole underground warfare gig."

"That makes one of us," Vance muttered, opening the car door. "The Army was never like this."
