"Right." Daws stood and crossed the room towards the phone. "Give me a minute, and I'll see what Jai can tell us."

Vance nodded at Daws. The he gave Timothy a gruff smile.
"I'm sorry we're asking you to put yourself at risk again, kid."

Timothy shrugged. "Ah, I don't mind it, Major Vance. Anything I can do to help out." He grinned crookedly. "I'm just glad my power can be some use -- it's not one with a lot of practical real-world applications, y'know?"

Vance chuckled grimly. "Don't knock it. Blowing things up has its drawbacks, too." A faint, rueful smile crossed his face. "There are times when I wouldn't much mind having a power that never hurt anybody."

"Yeah, I guess I can understand that." Timothy brushed his bangs out of his eyes. "About the closest I usually get to hurting anybody is interfering with their cell phones. I'm pretty glad of that."

"Wouldn't hurt you to be prepared tonight, though." Vance reached down to an old army bag beside his chair, and came up with a thirty-eight automatic, which he held out to Timothy on the flat of his palm. "You know how to use one of these?"

Timothy's eyes widened slightly, but he took the gun from Vance without hesitation. "Yeah, I've had a little experience. I used one at the bridge, and I've been practicing since then."

"That's good." Vance smiled crookedly. "Trust me, guns are the last weapon we've got any intention of using--and if we do use 'em, you'll be the last one to have to. That's only for if you've got no other choice. Otherwise, if there's any rough stuff, leave it to the rest of us."

Timothy nodded. "Okay, Major." He checked to make sure the safety of the gun was on, then slipped it into the pocket of his jacket.
Daws returned to the group at that moment, glancing at Vance. "Jai says there's a second line from the apartment, but it doesn't look like the alarms are wired into it. If I had to guess, I'd say Voegel probably had the second line put in for secure calls to his bosses."

"Okay. We'll pull it out if we can find it easily enough--otherwise we won't waste time and risk exposure hunting around for it." Vance looked around at the break-in team. "I guess that's about all there is to say. Handy--you'll be our getaway driver, but I'm afraid you'll have to wait with the car. Too many of us going in as it is."
If Handy was disappointed, he didn't show it; he simply nodded. "Sure, Jerod."

Daws nodded. "Okay, then. We go in, get the safe open, and get back out with that keycard and anything else useful we can get our hands on."
Timothy smiled crookedly. "You make it sound a lot simpler than it's probably going to be."

"If these things were simple, we'd have the war won by now." Vance turned to the two men in the room who were not going along. "Sid, thanks for the food. You might as well get on to work. Proteus... I guess you'll be keeping an eye on Voegel here."
"Don't worry, Major." Proteus smiled wryly. "He'll still be here when you get back."
"I don't doubt it." Vance half-smiled in return, then looked back at his team, and gestured to the door. "Okay. Let's move out."

The group moved to the parking lot and piled into the vehicle they were using for the night's activities.
Voegel's apartment was in a quiet, fairly well-to-do neighborhood; at that time of night the streets were mostly deserted, and nobody seemed to pay any attention to the dark van that pulled into an alley not far from the building where Voegel lived.
Daws leaned forward and peered out of the windshield at the street. "If the info Bell gave me was right, our friend in the black-and-white should be making his nightly pass pretty quick here."
As if on cue, a marked police cruiser passed the mouth of the alley at a moderate crawl. Daws gave a satisfied nod. "After this, he oughtta be out of our hair for a couple hours at least."

Vance turned to Handy. "You stay here and keep the engine running. With any luck, we won't have to be in a hurry when we come back, but be ready anyway."
"Right, Boss," Handy nodded.
The Major clapped his lieutenant on the shoulder, then slid out of the front passenger seat to join the others at the edge of the alley. He glanced at Timothy. "Okay--I don't know how you operate, but can you tell us if there are any signals in the air around here that might mean trouble?"

Timothy took a deep breath and closed his eyes, brow furrowing in concentration. "There's all sorts of signals flying around. Cell phones, internet, that kind of thing." He said after a moment. "And it seems like a lot of these buildings have alarms on wireless. I can't pick out which one is Voegel's at this distance, though."

"Don't worry--we'll be getting plenty closer." Vance turned to Flash. "Go find your jumping-off spot in Voegel's building. We'll wait."
"Gotcha," Flash murmured with a small salute, and headed off down the sidewalk on foot.
Vance turned back to Timothy and Daws. "He's gotta look around before he starts doing any teleporting. Once he's got the layout in his head, he can pick out a nice quiet storeroom or something, and take us in one at a time."

Daws nodded. "Sounds good. It's certainly a lot easier than my usual tactics for sneaking into a place."

"Sure--if you don't mind the disorientation and nausea." Vance grimaced. "Some people take teleporting better than others. Frankly, I'm not so hot with it."

Daws grimaced. "Well, then, I guess I'll have the chance to find out how I take it. I've never done it."
"I have." Timothy shrugged at Daws' raised eyebrow. "Well, I went steady with this girl for a while in high school . . . it's, uh, a long story."

Vance chuckled throatily. "It's a good thing you didn't let that slip around some of the other boys. They'd never rest until they heard all about it."
