"Sounds simple, right?" Daws said dryly. "Just our regular day at the office."

"I'd still like you to scout the location for our trap," Vance said to Daws. "Take Specter if you want any advice on strategic layouts. Meantime, I've got a lot of people and equipment to prep for all this."

She nodded, glancing at Nate. "We could do that now, if you don't think you need us to hold down the fort here. It's not that far to the building I've got in mind."

"Suits me fine," Nate said, uncoiling from the chair he was sitting backwards on. "Any excuse for some time outta this gorgeous place."
"Another thing," Vance added to Daws. "Find out if somebody from the Padre's people can babysit Voegel while we're busy getting shot at. Somebody who can take care of him, but is tough enough to handle any trouble he tries to give 'em."

She grinned wickedly. "From that description maybe I ought to sic the Padre himself on him. See if he can get a convert out of the arrangement by the time we finish up."

"If he wants to do it, fine by me. So long as we don't have to worry about Voegel." Vance glared down at the various sheets of notes he had written, shuffling through them. "Gotta keep in touch with the Twins and our man in politics too..."
He looked up at Caddy. "We'll let you get out of here, Doc, so you and your colleague can work on your end of things. We won't make any big moves until we hear you've either got something for us, or aren't going to have."

"I'll do whatever I can. We'll put the rush on it and call you the minute we've got anything. Best I can do by way of a guarantee. Sorry."
Caddy shrugged apologetically and turned to Thatcher, extending his hand. "Same goes for you. Can't make promises, but I'll do everything I possibly can to help your brother."
Thatcher studied him grimly for a moment before returning the handshake. "It's the closest thing I've had to hope in a long, long time. Thanks for that, if nothing else."

Vance saw Caddy to the door. "I'll let you know where we park Voegel, too, so you can keep an eye on him," he said, and watched the doctor leave. Then he turned back to the others in the room.
"Alright. Regina, Nate, if you're ready to go scouting, Handy and I'll hold down the fort until you get back. Then it's my turn to head out and coordinate with my people."

Daws nodded and stood, stretching her arms above her head. "You got it. We'll let you know what we find out." With a glance over her shoulder at Nate, she headed for the door of the room.

Nate followed Daws out. Once the door was shut behind them, he peeled off his mask and rubbed his face with a sigh of relief.
"Finally... I can take the boredom of babysitting captives, but having this thing on my face much longer was gonna make me go postal."

"Try wearing one over fur." Daws replied, stripping off her own mask and gloves and rubbing vigorously at the fur on her face. "There has got to be a better way to keep people from seeing our faces."

"Yeah. Just once, the prisoner oughta be the one to wear a blindfold for a change," Nate groused, fishing his keys out of his pocket as they walked toward his car (or at least the one from Vance's people's fleet that he happened to be using).
"I guess we've still gotta think carefully about unmasking in front of Thatcher, though. I mean, if we're gonna trust him enough to let him go back to the bad guys..."

Daws shuddered. "Yeah, I don't like where that could end up going. There's few things in this world that scare me, but the prospect of being on the wrong end of a microscope is definitely one of 'em."

"You think we can trust Cole's read on Thatcher that far?" Nate asked, as he unlocked the passenger door of the car for Daws.

"I don't know. I certainly hope so." Daws sighed as she climbed into the car, flicking her tail out of the way of the door. "Cole's given us a lot of grief, but he's never steered us wrong about anything he saw in anyone's head."

"I guess we're okay as long as he's not being fooled," Nate observed grimly, turning the key in the ignition.
"You said you had a place in mind for the ambush?" He grinned slightly. "Just gimme directions, and I'll try not to get us lost."

"Right." Daws closed her eyes thoughtfully for a moment. "Okay, hang a left out of here, go down about six blocks and take a right, then another left. The place I'm thinking of is on that corner."

Nate grinned. "For somebody who doesn't drive, seems like you've managed to get around town."
He followed the directions, slowing as he neared the intersection she had specified. Seeing more than one example of the kind of run-down buildings that populated the area, he glanced at Daws with a feeble grin.
"Uh... which corner?"

Daws chuckled and pointed at one of the buildings on their left -- a former apartment building with its windows boarded up and broken. "That's the one I had in mind. It's been empty long enough for nobody to be poking around, but not long enough for it to be hazardous inside."

Nate studied the building cannily. "An apartment complex, huh? That'd make it a nice maze to set some traps in--but maybe more complicated to maneuver if we run into trouble, too. Let's take a look..."
Cautiously he pulled into the lot, parking behind the building, where the car wouldn't be seen from the road. He clambered out from behind the steering wheel with a stretch--and then drew his gun from under his jacket to check its state of readiness.
"Old habit," he said wryly to Daws. "Used to find the darnedest things in abandoned buildings in Iraq--and not one of 'em was ever nice."
