"I just hope it'll give us enough useful information to be worth the effort." Daws replied with a shrug.

"Here's hoping," Vance muttered. "Regina, maybe you can go on over and make a big deal about bracing for trouble. In a couple of minutes, Nate and I'll bring Proteus--excuse me, Doctor G. We'll play it up nice and hostile."

Daws nodded and slipped out of the room, pausing before entering the room next door to make sure that her mask was in place. Then she assumed a somewhat harried expression and stepped into the room where Voegel was being held.
"Look lively." She said to Caddy and Handy without preamble, scowling across the room at Voegel, "We're going to bring him in. We need everyone on their toes."

Less than two minutes later, there was a sound of footsteps and activity outside the door, and Nate threw it open with one hand. His other hand had a firm grip on the right arm of Proteus, in his guise as Doctor G. Major Vance held the impostor's left arm, while his other hand held a pistol nudged close against Proteus' back. The disguised shapeshifter wore an expression of coldly outraged contempt.
"Here's your new roommate, Voegel," Vance said viciously--and shoved Proteus down onto the bed beside the captive scientist.

Voegel's eyes had widened in shock when Nate had shoved the door open; as 'Doctor G' dropped onto the bed, Voegel's expression twisted in outraged disbelief -- and an undercurrent of fear.
"What . . . how on earth did you . . ."

"Your pal here just happened to drop in while we were looting your apartment last night," Vance said, with a devious relish. "He was pretty upset that we got to some of your goods first. Seems like you boys don't even trust each other much, do you?"
"Shut up!" the ersatz Doctor G snarled, glaring at Vance.

Voegel's grip tightened ineffectually around the strips of blanket binding him to the bed. "What are you trying to do, mutie? You think playing us against each other will get us talking?"

"Just what have you told them already?" Proteus hissed at Voegel, halfway under his breath, as he squirmed to sit up against the headboard of the bed.

Voegel shot him a black look. "Nothing." He replied icily.

"Maybe that's true," Vance said glibly. "Maybe it isn't."
Proteus squirmed and made a show of trying to break out of his bonds. "If you've said one word to them, Voegel, I'll kill you myself..."

"Don't be a fool." Voegel snapped, glaring at Vance. "You're playing right into the hands of these tin-plated amateurs."

Vance gave a snort. "I'd expect a better insult from a brain like yours, Voegel."
He shrugged and settled himself into a chair at the table across the room. "I think we'll just leave you two to catch up on old times for a little while."

Voegel scowled blackly. "You can wait all you want, but I've got no intention of simply handing you information."

"Oh, of course not," Vance retorted snidely, fishing a cigar out of his pocket. "I just thought you might like to get a little information from your pal here, about what he thought he was doing in your apartment. You know, to keep him from getting his hands on your computer files, we had to give up that nice little stash of money you had." He left that remark purposely vague, hoping to see what Voegel would read into it.

Voegel's scowl shifted focus from Vance to the disguised Proteus. "Just what was your strategy there, Doctor?" He remarked contemptuously.

The false Doctor G assumed an imperious air--with the faintest undercurrent of defensiveness beneath it.
"I was protecting our interests, Doctor," he said coldly. "Someone has to, when colleagues are inclined to leave sensitive research materials lying around at home."

Voegel's eyes narrowed. "My personal research is hardly your concern."

"It is when your material is borrowed--without permission," Proteus snapped, falling back on Vance's recounting of the real Doctor G's claims. "You should know I don't take kindly to interference in my own work."

Voegel paled considerably at that, shrinking away slightly from Doctor G. "I -- I don't know what you're talking about."

Having discovered a sensitive subject, Proteus pressed the point.
"Don't play games with me, Voegel. The files you stole were from a private project of my own." He paused for effect, his eyes narrowing. "And this talk of money--for all I know, you were plotting to sell your knowledge to these miscreants all along. Maybe you're working for them even now..."
