"We don't want anything too obviously connected to Sid," Vance replied. "He's already run enough risk of exposure. Just in case Nate and Miss Cole do get followed and watched, I don't want anyone tracing the 'reservation' back to him."

Daws nodded. "You said it, Major. He should be able to come up with something that'll fit the bill."
She frowned thoughtfully. "Still, probably wouldn't hurt to have some of your boys who are good at the sneaky stuff keeping an eye on things, too -- just in case."

"That's a given," Vance replied. "Bender and a few other guys can keep watch from a distance."
"Oh, good. Chaperones," Nate deadpanned.

Cole gave a somewhat pained grin. "Hopefully you won't need them -- for any reason."

"Trust Nate," Vance murmured. "He's a soldier."
Then the Major spread his hands. "Any other points we need to be clear on right now?"

Cole shook his head. "You've been more than fair, Major. I'll do my part to make sure this mess doesn't get any worse than it already is."

Vance eyed Cole with a wry shake of his head. "It's about time you realized it..."
He abruptly stood up. "I guess that's all for now, then. I'll let you know when we have Miss Cole's trip arranged. And you let Miss Dawson know when you're going to meet Tiernan..." His expression became grim. "Because if that doesn't go well, we'll all need to be braced for trouble."

Cole nodded. "I'll be in touch."
"And I'll keep all of you down at the Parish in the loop." Daws said, glancing at Ana.
Ana nodded. "We'll be ready for it." A small arc of white-hot electric current jumped between her fingers. "Count on it."

"Okay then." Vance looked around at his companions. "I think we can leave His Honor to start rehearsing his performance for the Bat's benefit. Watch your back, Cole," he added over his shoulder, as he headed for the door.

"Watch yours, Major." Cole murmured wryly, as he watched the group depart.

The group of mutants remained quiet until they had slipped out the back entrance of the building. Only when they were making their way back to the car did Vance look around at his companions and speak up.
"I guess that could have gone worse... any thoughts, folks?"

Ana made a scoffing noise. "He's crazy." She said bluntly. She glanced at Nate. "You best hope that sister ain't as crazy as he is, or you're in for a rough weekend."

Nate made a somewhat agonized face.
"He's a fool, maybe. I don't know about crazy," Vance replied. "He definitely needs his priorities straightened. But he'd be a lot to handle if he had any decent amount of judgment."
Handy shrugged. "I dunno... How hard can it be to figure keepin' a whole city safe is more important than saving just one person?"
Vance gave Nate a gentle look. "You might not be so quick to ask that if you had any relatives of your own, Handy."

Daws shook her head. "I can see taking an awful lot of risks for the sake of one person you love," she glanced at Vance. "But Cole takes it way too far."
She shrugged. "I still say we oughtta see about cluing Marla Cole into just how much risk her brother's running for her sake. He might actually listen if it's her telling him his priorities are screwy."

"I'm all for that." Vance grinned at his son. "How persuasive are you with the ladies, Nate?"
The younger man vented a longsuffering sigh. "At least that'll give us something to talk about."

Daws snickered. "Hey, we told you when you joined up that it was going to be a weird war."

"Yeah, see, I kinda thought 'weird' meant bad guys with exotic powers," Nate retorted. "Not battlefield matchmaking services."
Vance shook his head. "We tease to relieve the pressure, Nate. There's some real danger to this, and the job is a serious one--keeping that girl safe."

Daws nodded. "I may not be overly fond of her brother or the way he's handled this whole thing -- but I still don't want Tiernan getting his hands on that girl. Just bein' around that twisted mind of his would be awful unpleasant for anyone with even a little telepathic power -- let alone someone who's been hiding from regular garden-variety ugly thoughts for twenty years or more."

Nate's eyes widened, and he almost audibly gulped. "You mean she's a telepath too?"
Vance grinned. "Not so innocent after all, are ya."

Daws chuckled. "Relax -- she's nowhere near as powerful as her brother, or at least that's what he says. I only met her once -- really briefly -- but she seemed pretty much like Cole describes her."
