"I'm starting to come around to that." Vance cracked a faint smile, then looked thoughtful again.
"It's making me think the lovebirds could use a little prompting to make it official. I've picked up a few things while I've been laying around here. You know they still stay in separate rooms. That is..." He frowned, searching for a delicate phrasing. "Apparently they're waiting, if you know what I mean."
He sighed heavily and shook his head. "The way things are, maybe it'd be better for them to take what they can out of life."

"Hmm." Daws frowned thoughtfully as she ate a few more bites. "Me and Sid did some kidding around about them tying the knot right after they first admitted things to each other, but that's all it really was -- kidding around. And all Miriam said was that it was too soon to think about that sort of thing."
She shrugged. "You ask me, life's too short for them not to think about it -- especially the dangerous breed of life we seem to be living lately. But I dunno what it'd take to nudge Miriam or Alex into thinking that. Concerted effort on the part of all the rest of us, maybe."

"I guess so." Vance sighed and stared up at the ceiling.
"Life is too complicated. Everything could smash tomorrow--and here we are, talking about plotting a wedding. But I guess we'd all go nuts if we didn't give ourselves distractions like that."

Daws grinned lopsidedly. "I'm not too sure we haven't all gone nuts already."
She shrugged one shoulder. "I guess you're right, though -- it's just a way of dealing. Face the big, terrifying problems when they come up, do what you can, and . . ." she made a faint gesture with her fork, "Just try to live life in the gaps where you've done all you can."

"Mmm. In my case, there aren't a whole lot of gaps. Never have been. That's why I wouldn't know what to do with myself in that 'normal' life."
He shifted his position slightly. "One thing's for sure. You're right in thinking you'd never be bored with me around. If it wasn't this fight, it'd be something else, somewhere else."

Daws smiled. "That sounds kinda like a challenge to me, Major. And you've seen how I get when there's a challenge involved."

Vance grinned slightly. "I always did have a soft spot for those old detective movies. Of course, I'm a little old for an apprentice, but if you can stand Joey Falco..."

Daws laughed. "Well, you look all right in a fedora -- that's a big mark in your favor."
She pointed at Vance with her fork, a mock-stern look on her face. "And speakin' of Joey -- if you ever do decide to start hanging around the office, don't go scaring him off. That kid's done more filing in the past six months than I've done in the past six years."

Vance waved a hand slightly. "The kid's okay. If he hasn't sold us out by now, I'm satisfied about his loyalties." His expression darkened slightly. "I'm just concerned that if he was ever found out... well, he might not hold up to questioning as well as I did."

Daws flinched. "I worry about that, too -- believe me."
She frowned, momentarily lost in unpleasant thoughts -- and then shook her head abruptly. "We got you out." She said quietly, "I'd do what it took to get him out, too. That's the best I can do, I guess -- that, and prayin' that it never comes to that."

"Still can't get your head around the idea of acceptable losses," Vance murmured. Before Daws could argue, he changed the subject.
"You might ask Handy to bring me a couple of my books. I'm not particular which--but if I'm going to be on my back for a while, I want something to do besides stare at the ceiling and think."

Daws nodded. "Sure thing -- and once I get this crisis with the Spooks handled one way or another," she grinned, "I still owe you a chess defeat or two."

"Well, I'll be looking forward to that." Vance smiled slightly, then frowned. "And if you'll bring me a cellphone, I'll get out those orders to Rog for the Spooks' security. We'd better not waste any time getting that in place."

"Sure thing." Daws nodded. "And by the way -- we were sort of wondering if you'd want to relocate to Henry's once you're a bit more stabilized. He's got the extra room, and it'd be closer to your operations in case any of your boys needed to see you directly while you're recuperating."

Vance's expression showed his immediate interest. "That'd be a good idea. Better to be away from Sid's kids asking questions, anyway. I'd have had some of my people in here to consult with already if it weren't for them."

Daws nodded. "Okay then. I'll let Henry know so he can get things ready for ya -- Caddy says you should be okay to transport tomorrow or the next day."
She shrugged and stood up. "I guess I'll see about getting that phone for you now."

"Okay then." Vance nodded, and grinned faintly. "And next time, bring a spare fork."

"Don't push your luck, Major." Daws replied teasingly.
She left the bedroom and headed back to the kitchen, where she set her plate in the sink. "You were right," she told Miriam with a grin, "He's a scavenger."

"At least he doesn't do that ordinarily," Miriam replied with a shrug. "Has he had any new ideas?"

Daws shrugged. "He's going to have some of his boys station themselves in Spooktown with weaponry -- so if Tiernan starts anything, they'll at least have some backup to protect the women and the kids. Other than that . . ." she sighed and shook her head, "I'm sort of stuck for what else we could do."
