"I'm afraid I don't have anything to suggest, either." Miriam sighed and shrugged. "I wish I knew more about the kind of tests Tiernan wanted to have done on the body."
She glanced up at Daws again. "Did the Major say whether he wants to move to Henry's? If he does, I thought maybe I should go along and help look after him for a few days."

Daws nodded. "He thinks it'd be a good idea. That way he can coordinate with his people without having to worry about the kids. And I'm sure it'd be a good idea for there to be someone with some first aid experience there -- just to keep an eye on him."

"Well, I'm no nurse," Miriam replied self-deprecatingly. "But at least I can manage the basics."
She frowned. "Alex won't like it much, but I certainly can't take him along. Not--to Henry's." There was a bit of frustration in the sigh she breathed out then.

Daws grimaced faintly. "No . . . I don't see that being a good idea at all."
She sighed and shook her head. "I wish there was some way to fix that situation -- but if there is, I certainly don't know it."

"I'm over it," Miriam muttered. "We have more important things to worry about, and if Henry really wants to help, he can stop being so overprotective. He ought to realize Alex is looking out for me as much as he is."
She never had quite realized what Henry really felt toward her.

"I suppose so." Daws shrugged and changed the subject.
"Anyway, I need to track down a phone so Vance can call his people an' get them down to Spooktown. The sooner we get that done, the better, I guess."

Miriam looked thoughtful. "See if Handy's still around here someplace. I think he's got the Major's cellphone on him." She chuckled abruptly. "Last I saw him, he was in the kitchen, helping Alex do the dishes."

Daws grinned. "Now I bet that's something worth seeing."
She made her way to the kitchen where -- as promised -- she found Handy and Alex at the sink. "Not getting in any soapsud fights, are ya, boys?"

Alex grinned and pointed to Handy--who was wearing a pink apron that belonged to Consuela. "He's the fastest dish-dryer I've ever seen."
"You're not the only guy knows his way around a kitchen," Handy retorted. "I've been makin' sure Jerod eats regular ever since we hooked up."

Daws laughed. "Nothin' wrong with being a little domestic, right?"
She leaned one shoulder casually against the wall. "Say, d'you still have Vance's cell phone? He's got some orders he wants to relay."

"Oh. Sure." Handy dried the soapy water from his lower right hand, then moved to the bar, over which he had slung his jacket. He delved into a pocket and produced the phone.
"Here ya go." He handed it to Daws. "Rog's the first number on the speed dial."

"Thanks, Handy." Daws grinned and threw off a lazy half-salute. "You two boys have fun finishing those dishes."
Cell phone in hand, Daws once again climbed the stairs and knocked at the door of Sid's bedroom.

"C'mon in," Vance called out, and gave Proteus a look. "Would you give us a few more minutes?"
The shapeshifter withdrew his hand from Vance's arm and stood up, frowning. "Getting you healed is going to take forever with all these interruptions," he protested mildly, then retreated from the room as Daws entered.
"Got the phone?" Vance asked.

Daws nodded and handed it over with a grin. "An' in case you've ever wondered -- Handy looks pretty good in a frilly pink apron."

Vance rolled his eye. "Well, I'm not complaining. He's not the most competent person in the world, but I can't fault his Saint-Bernard enthusiasm for helping out."
He dialed Roger Latimore's number on the phone and had a brief conversation, which amounted to a directive that any of their people who weren't otherwise occupied should stake out an armed position around Spooktown.
"And don't provoke the natives," he warned. "Keep your distance, and if anybody gets hassled, tell 'em to back away until the Spooks settle down. The last thing we need is a fight with them too."
After some admonitions by Roger that Vance rest, the conversation ended, and he handed the phone back to Daws. "Okay, that's in motion."

Daws nodded. "All right. At least they won't be totally unprotected. That's somethin', anyway."
She stood. "I'll let Proteus get back to his life support. Like Roger said -- get some rest."

"Hmph." Vance frowned thoughtfully. "You know... I woke up once, early this morning, and before Proteus realized I was coming to..." He shook his head. "Well, if I saw what I thought I saw, I don't blame him for being private about what he really looks like."

Daws raised an inquisitive eyebrow, and shrugged. "Life's full of tradeoffs." She observed, "Maybe that's his -- for bein' able to do what he does."

"Maybe so." Vance sighed and shrugged. "Well, I guess all our business for today is done--and what a day. You going back to your place for the night?"

Daws nodded. "I might as well -- no sense in taking up Sid's couch for another night. I'll be back tomorrow."
She patted his shoulder gently. "Have a good night, okay?"
