Daws scowled. "Jerks like that have always been around." She remarked blackly, "Before it was mutants it was just some other group."
Her expression turned thoughtful. "I suppose that's yet another possible explanation for our mystery girl."

Sid grimaced. "Like her case wasn't upsettin' enough. That poor kid's life sounds like more of a nightmare every time we learn somethin' else."
He shook his head. "If she was--workin' fer Rizzo--that coulda had a lot ta do with why she got killed, too."

Daws nodded sadly. "Yeah. If she decided she wanted to leave, or if Rizzo wanted to use her against someone and she wouldn't go along with it . . ." she shook her head with a sigh.

"I've officially lost count of all the 'ifs'." Joey shook his head. "How are we ever gonna unravel all this?"
"I dunno if we can," Sid admitted. "Not sure how much it really matters now. It seems awful sure Rizzo killed her, an' he an' everybody else they ever knew are prob'ly either dead or halfway in the grave." He frowned. "Not that it don't bother me not to at least know who she was, an' understand why she went through what she did."

"I've never tried anything like this before." Daws admitted with a frustrated sigh, "Something this old, this buried. But . . . there must be some angle, some clue or something. Something to at least tell us who she was." She shook her head stubbornly. "I hate an unsolved mystery."

Joey glumly poked through the remainder of the stack of papers. "I guess pretty much the last hope is that Proteus will know something about what went on with the mutants in the city back then."

"Yeah." Daws sighed and glanced at Sid, gesturing to the small black book in his hand. "I'll take that, if you don't mind. It's been a long time, but maybe Proteus'll remember one of the names we don't recognize. Anything's possible."

"Sure." Sid handed Daws the book. "I'll be glad ta have trash like that outta my safe, anyway. An' if there's anythin' else ya want from all that stuff, feel free. Now that it's out, I wanna get rid of it, an' I dunno what ta do with it."

Daws chuckled dryly. "Make an anonymous donation to a museum for office-related flotsam, maybe?" She shrugged and turned her attention back to the pile of papers for a moment, rifling through them.
"I guess a typewritten confession with Rizzo's signature is a bit much to ask for." She said, glancing at Joey, "But we might as well pack up anything else with his name on it, or anything from about that time."

Joey shrugged and went back to sifting through the documents. "I don't see anything else that looks important, but I wouldn't know."
Sid returned to his desk, propping his elbows on its surface and his chin on his hands. "So ya got any word from Proteus that he's even gonna be at the meetin'?"

Daws shook her head. "You know him. He comes and goes pretty much as he pleases. I think he'll be there, if only to see if we're planning on anything to rile up Tiernan."
She shrugged. "I guess even if he isn't there this time, there's no particular hurry. This mystery's gone unsolved for eighty years -- a little more delay won't do much."

"Yeah... I guess so." Sid was thoughtful for a moment, then grinned. "So ya heard any more from Vance an' Junior? I haven't heard about anythin' gettin' blown sky-high, so I guess they're behavin' 'emselves so far..."

Daws laughed. "Yeah, or more likely they're just keeping whatever mayhem they're causing on the down low." She shook her head. "I wouldn't know -- I haven't heard from Vance since the day we picked the kid up. I guess they've got a lot of catching up to do."

"Yeah, I'll bet they do. Prob'ly bondin' over a few cases a' TNT." Sid grinned. "I'm lookin' forward ta meetin' the kid. If he's a chip off the ol' block, he oughta be a right guy. Crazy--but right."

"That's how he struck me." Daws agreed.
She glanced at Joey with a shrug. "Well, I guess if there's nothing else we can use in this stuff, we might as well clear out before things start getting crowded upstairs."

Sid glanced at the clock. "Yeah, we're gonna start gettin' busy in a little bit." He rose and extended his hand across the desk. "I'll see ya at the meetin'."

"Right." Daws retrieved her coat and fedora, then grasped Sid's hand warmly. "Take care of yourself until then, all right? Steer clear of any more unsolved mysteries."

Sid chuckled. "Believe me, Daws, I don't go lookin' fer 'em."
Then he turned to Joey. "Still takin' Tara to the game Friday night, huh?"
Joey blushed slightly and fidgeted. "Uh, yes sir. If that's okay with you."
"Yeah, sure." Sid gave him a faint grin that turned devious at the last moment. "Just have 'er home by midnight, or I'll sic Consuela on ya."
"Uh--yes sir," Joey gulped quietly.
With a private smile at Daws, Sid shambled back to his desk. "'Kay then. S'long, guys."
