Names: Jai and Veeru Patil
Mutant Nickname: simply "The Twins"
Mutant Powers: The Twins’ senses of perception are disproportionably shared; Jai is hyper-sensitive to touch, light, and sound while Veeru is nearly immune to pain. This imbalance is only corrected when the two share physical contact.
Occupations: Online hacker/"security expert" and motorcycle mechanic, respectively
Gender: Male
Age: 29
Height: 6'
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Brown
Physical Description: Both twins are dark-skinned and good looking. Veeru is muscular, laid-back, and wears his hair short; Jai is much paler than his brother, slightly-built, and wears his hair in a long braid.
Country/Hometown: Mumbai (Bombay) India
Immediate Family: Father, Pradesh and Mother, Shakti: both still in India.
Personalities: Veeru is brash and strong-willed, but ultimately a good-natured soul. Jai, when he interacts with anyone but Veeru, is almost painfully polite and shy.
Weaknesses: Jai cannot cope with an everyday environment and must stay in sensory isolation unless he is touching his brother. Veeru’s inability to sense pain means he often is ignorant of his injuries, and he walks with a noticeable limp.
Additional (Non-Mutation) Skills: Veeru is very skilled at small-engine repair; Jai is an exceptionally skilled hacker.
Personal History: Born in Bombay (Mumbai) during the last days of the "Indian Emergency", twins Jai and Veeru were quite literally joined at the hip -- the boys, born conjoined, shared a fused pelvic bone and an intertwined nervous system. Although the family was wealthy enough to afford surgery at their birth (their father, Pradesh, is a chemical engineer), the boys remained conjoined because their mother was told by a Hindu seer that “great misfortune” would attend any attempts at separating them.
When the boys were eleven, their mother finally relented and they were separated in a lengthy and complex surgery. Veeru recovered quickly; Jai, however, did not. Instead he became more and more painfully sensitive to the slightest stimulus; within a few weeks he had lapsed into a trance-like withdrawal. The situation became even more confusing to the family when they discovered that Veeru (who had meanwhile become even more fearless than was normal for an eleven-year-old) could rouse his brother from his withdrawal with only the touch of a hand.
For several years the family sought the advice of numerous doctors and holy men. As they searched, Veeru grew increasingly reckless; he took up motorcycle racing and shattered the still-fragile hip that had been reconstructed during the surgery, causing a permanent limp. Jai, except when his brother was at hand, remained withdrawn in a dim room of the family home.
When the twins were nineteen one of the doctors suggested they be taken to America, where “further tests could be conducted”. The boys’ parents tearfully agreed, packing their sons off to what they hoped would be a solution. Instead, Veeru was drugged by the erstwhile “Doctor” and abandoned at a cheap hotel in New York City, while the doctor -- and Jai -- disappeared without a trace. After months of frustrating, fruitless searching, Veeru sought the help of Grimalkin, Inc. (Jack Knight was still living at the time).
Knight and his partner Regina Dawson (who had just turned eighteen) finally discovered that Jai had been abducted by Prometheum, a large “security” firm specializing in Internet-based industrial espionage. An employee of Prometheum, masquerading as a doctor, had correctly guessed that Jai was sensitive enough to actually interpret electrical impulses and signals. Advanced -- and highly illegal -- implants had turned the young man into a literal living computer, now part of Prometheum’s central network. Rescued by Knight, Dawson, and his brother, Jai retained his ability to use the Internet as a sort of extended nervous system; his first act once free was to transmit the records of Prometheum’s illegal activities to the federal authorities, and the company was crushed overnight.
Fearing retribution from former Prometheum employees, the Twins have not contacted their parents or attempted to leave the country. Veeru works illegally but successfully as a motorcycle mechanic in Little Calcutta; Jai uses his abilities as an online “security expert”; he has successfully "upgraded" himself to keep up with the advances in Internet technology, but remains (without Veeru’s help) almost unable to interact with any world but the virtual one.
Anything Else: Seems like a ridiculously rich background for what are ultimately minor characters, doesn’t it?
