"Good." Proteus tilted his head. "And tell Sid he'll probably hear from me. I'd like to know how Doctor Van Linden is doing."

"Sure, we'll keep you posted." Daws glanced back over her shoulder towards the house.
"Caddy says most coma patients come out of it in about two weeks . . . but I hope it won't take that long." She sighed and took a moody drag on her cigarette. "I don't think Alex would be able to stand it."

"I guess it's a cinch he won't be back on the stage until she's better," Proteus murmured.
The screen door creaked open, and Vance emerged onto the porch again. He handed a cellphone to Proteus. "Here. Like all our phones, it's set up through a dummy account, so there's no worry about security. You can drop it off at Our Lady of Refuge when things quiet down."
Proteus flipped open the phone, studying its buttons somewhat apprehensively. "I never have quite figured these things out..."
"Making one call is straightforward enough." Vance turned to Daws, and held out a phone number written in large, dark print on a piece of paper. "This is the number for that phone. Can you make that out alright?"

Daws took the paper and peered at it for a moment, holding it close to her face. She nodded. "Yeah -- good enough to dial it, anyhow." She tucked the paper into her pocket.

"Okay." Vance shrugged. "Nate called for a couple of our people to come here and help take home our wounded. They should be here in a few minutes. Have you got a ride home yourself, Regina?"

"Ah . . ." Daws shrugged one shoulder. "I hadn't got that far yet, actually."

"I figured." The merest ghost of a fondly exasperated smile crossed Vance's lips; then he frowned. "And you're certainly not gonna go navigating the subways in your condition. I'll see about somebody to take you home."
He paused. "I'd do it myself, but I think it's best if I go on with the boys... and start trying to explain it all to the guys who weren't with us last night."

Daws nodded. "All right."
She climbed to her feet and put her hand on Vance's elbow. "Just . . . take care, okay?"

Vance slipped his hand into hers and squeezed briefly. "I will. You take care of those eyes--and if you have to call in Proteus, make sure your next call is to me."

"Sure." Daws smiled thinly. "Gotta keep that concern for my welfare in mind, right?"

"Yeah." Vance put his hands on her shoulders and kissed her forehead lightly. Then he quietly turned and went into the house.
Proteus finally stood up as well. "I'd better get moving too. It's been..." He smiled crookedly. "Well, quite a while since I had any sleep."

"Yeah." Daws rubbed absently at her bandaged arm. "Well -- I suppose it goes without saying, but be careful out there."

"I wouldn't still be here if I wasn't." Proteus smiled thinly at the detective. "Take care, Miss Dawson."
Hands in pockets, Proteus strolled off around the side of the house. A few moments later, Roger shambled out onto the porch.
"Major said you needed a ride," he said laconically to Daws.

Daws grinned sheepishly. "Yeah, if you don't mind. I don't think I'm really up to a subway trip just now."

"No kidding." Roger shrugged. "We can go right now if you're ready."

Daws nodded. "I'm ready. Gimme a chance to say goodbye to Caddy and Hubert."

"Sure. I gotta get the car keys from the Lieutenant--he's in charge of our little motor pool right now." Roger pulled open the screen door for Daws, and followed her in.

Daws made her way to the kitchen, where both Caddy and Hubert were now seated at the table, nursing their latest cups of coffee. She leaned in through the kitchen doorway and nodded at them.
"Roger's gonna take me home." She said, "Figured I'd let you know before I took off."
Caddy glanced up with a faux-shocked expression. "What? You're actually gonna take your doctor's advice for a change?"
Daws grinned crookedly. "Don't get used to it." She shrugged one shoulder. "I'll be back before long -- once my eyes clear up enough for me to tackle the subways. I wanna do what I can for Alex and Miriam."
Caddy nodded. "Sure. I'll keep you posted if anything changes before that."
"Thanks." Daws nodded in farewell and went in search of Roger.

Roger was standing near the front door, arms folded and keys in hand, talking with Nate. The two men looked up as Daws came into the room.
"Well, I guess we're in a holding pattern for a while," Nate said rather glumly, giving Daws' elbow a squeeze. "Have you got my cell number? Dad's gonna be... well, kind of taken up for a while--so unless you hear from Tiernan, it might be better to call me if you need anything."

Daws smiled gratefully and nodded. "Yeah, I've got it written down somewhere at home. Thanks, Nate -- for everything."
