Vance swallowed down a wordless noise and slowly unclenched his jaw, giving Caddy a glare.
"I'll take your word," he gritted, and glanced at Daws, in search of any sign of suppressed chuckling.

Daws suppressed a grin and turned her head in Caddy's direction. "How's it look, Caddy?"
The doctor made a slightly disapproving noise and gestured gauze and rubbing alcohol over from the other side of the room. "You people have a warped definition of 'scratch', that's how it looks."

"It's not bothering me much," Vance countered. "And I'm not interested in hearing you get worked up about it, so save your breath. These things happen."

"Fair enough." Caddy shrugged one shoulder and applied his attention to cleaning the wound. "I've treated worse tonight, anyway.
"Does get a little deep here on one end, though." He continued, setting aside the alcohol, "I might as well close it up -- it'll only take a second and it'll keep it from getting infected . . . Hey Daws, did you see where I --" Caddy broke off with a sheepish glance towards the door. "Uh, no. I guess you wouldn't have."
Daws grinned a bit forcedly and waved in the direction of the chair she'd been seated in earlier in the evening. "You left the liquid sutures over there someplace."
Caddy nodded and -- after a glance over his shoulder -- drifted the tube of surgical adhesive through the air. "Serves me right for not putting things back where they belong, I guess." He muttered.
He finished sealing Vance's wound and gave the adhesive a few moments to dry before covering it with a layer of gauze and adhesive tape, then sat back. "Okay, Major. You're all patched up."

Vance ran his fingers over the bandage, then glanced up at Caddy with a hollow, half-grudging smile. "Thanks, Doc."
He stood up gingerly and tucked his shirt in. "So what do the boys need in the way of followup visits to you?"

Caddy shrugged as he discarded his gloves and began drifting various medical supplies back to their proper places. "Some of the minor injuries should be okay on their own. Like I told Blizzard, I'm going to have to take that cast off for him -- might be a bit longer than five weeks if he doesn't take it easy, but I don't think it'll be too complicated."
He frowned slightly and leaned back against the counter. "Those acid burns Auger got are pretty nasty -- he's going to need fresh bandages every twelve hours or so until they start knitting, or they'll get infected. I guess you guys can probably handle that yourselves.
"Lariat's got a concussion -- it's not serious enough for me to keep him here, but keep an eye on him in the next couple of days. If he seems to be behaving oddly -- if he sleeps more than usual or complains of headaches -- then get him to me or another doctor. That could mean complications, and those could get ugly quick.
"Same goes for Scythe -- just keep an eye on him. A bruised lung isn't too big of a deal by itself, but he needs more attention if he starts having any trouble breathing." Caddy shrugged. "And that's about it, really. Every one of you needs a couple days of rest and recovery."

"You're telling me." Vance sighed and shook his head. "Okay, yeah. Bandages we can deal with--and you know I'll be keeping an eye on all my people."
Then he glanced across the room, toward the area that had been curtained off, and tilted his head in that direction.
"I guess Sid's still back there with Malone and the Doc... Maybe you oughta drag him out for a minute to look after that schnozzle of his now."

Caddy nodded and straightened, moving across the room to pull the curtain aside slightly.
He popped his head in through the gap, eyebrows raised. "Hey, Sid?" He said quietly, "I can take care of your nose whenever you're ready."

Sid looked up from bending solicitously over Alex, who sat with head bowed in his chair beside Miriam's bed.
"Oh. Sure." Giving his friend's shoulder one last comforting squeeze, Sid stepped out from behind the curtain, and sat down in the chair Vance had previously occupied.
He gingerly touched his sore nose. "Least this ain't from anybody's nutty powers--I just got smacked a good one by somebody's elbow."

"Hey, an injury's an injury." Caddy wheeled his padded stool over and took a seat, examining the livid bruise and swelling that covered the bridge of Sid's nose.
After a moment, he probed the area very gently with his thumb and grimaced. "Well, the bad news is, it's definitely broken." He sat back slightly. "And, uh . . . well, the worse news is it's gonna hurt like heck to put it back in place. Sorry."

Sid grimaced. "Ya know it's nothin' I ain't been through before, Doc. Do what ya gotta do."

Caddy nodded and placed his thumbs on either side of Sid's nose, carefully moving it back into proper alignment. He pulled a roll of white adhesive tape from the air to his left and used a few strips to stabilize the injury, then sat back and returned the tape to its proper place.
"Okay -- you probably know the drill on this one." He told Sid. "Leave the bandages on for a couple days, do your best not to bump anything, use an ice pack to bring the swelling down, and take some tylenol if the pain bothers you. Pretty basic stuff."

"Yep. Done it a few times since I was a kid." Sid made a slight face--trying not to disturb his nose in the process. "The fun part's gonna be showin' up at the club with it... if I can work myself up fer goin' ta work at all right now." He glanced miserably toward the curtain that shielded Miriam and Alex from sight.

"Ah. Yeah." Caddy sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "How's Alex doing? I haven't heard a peep from back there all day."

"Eh." Sid shrugged morosely. "He's just... sittin'. Holdin' her hand. Hasn't said a word."
He frowned. "I better call Gracie, an' give her as much notice as I can that she's gotta carry the show tonight. I don't figure Foxy's goin' anywhere fer a while."

"Yeah." Caddy frowned thoughtfully at the curtained-off end of the examination room. "We'll have to keep Miriam here, at least for a while -- I need to have her where Hubert or I can keep an eye on her EEG. It's . . . probably best if we move her upstairs. I don't have a lot of patients in any given week, but we can't risk one of them recognizing her."

Sid nodded. "Sure. I can help Foxy move her when yer ready."
"Maybe you'd better leave that to one of my boys," Vance spoke up, from his silent position near the doorway. "We don't want you putting your nose out of joint again."
"Nah... I'll be fine. I wanna handle this." Sid shrugged sadly. "Miriam's family, after all this time. I wanna take care of her."

Caddy nodded. "I understand." He shrugged and straightened up. "Well . . . I suppose there's no sense putting it off. There's a much more comfortable chair for Alex up in the guest room, too."

" 'Kay." Sid got up slowly and moved to the curtain, poking his head around it. He spoke softly to Alex, then pushed the curtain back.
Alex had stood up as well, and he bent over Miriam. Sid moved forward to help him, but the younger man only gave him a look and shook his head before gathering Miriam into his arms.
Sid shrugged and turned to Caddy. "Well, I guess you better lead the way."

Caddy nodded and led them out of the examination room, down the hall, and upstairs. He pushed open the door at the end of the upstairs hallway, revealing a clean, sunlit room with a single bed and a single battered armchair.
Caddy pulled back the covers of the bed with a swift burst of teke, and then gestured to it. "I'll bring up the EEG monitor later on." He said quietly. "She should be okay for now, though."
