Vance grimaced. "That isn't a pleasant thought. Do Sid and Malone know you plan on keeping her?"

Hubert shook his head. "That sort of thing is rather more Cadeceus' line than mine. I imagine he'll be discussing treatments and so on with them once he's finished treating injuries."

Vance nodded grimly. "I don't envy him... Do you know how Scythe's doing? He's the big guy with the tail--I know he took some pretty rough hits across his back, while he was trying to shield other people."

Hubert nodded. "He's pretty badly bruised, and he has some burns across his right shoulder blade that are going to need careful tending to stave off infection. I believe he may have a mildly bruised lung as well, but it's not causing him any worrisome difficulty breathing. He'll need rest and time to recover -- but the same can be said for all of you."

"One thing about Scythe can't be said for the rest of us," Vance said quietly. "His brother died in those tunnels... I don't know how I'm gonna face him. How I'm gonna justify taking Scorpion and the others there, to die for a job we failed at anyway."

Daws reached out to lightly rest her hand on Vance's, shooting a concerned glance in Hubert and Proteus' direction. "We knew going in there how bad our chances were, Jerod." She murmured.

"That's the line the commanding officer is supposed to give. Like walking into it willingly makes death any more noble." Vance shook his head. "I learned better than that a long time ago."

"Maybe." Daws shrugged one shoulder. "We still made our choices -- because we knew we had to try. If we hadn't . . ."

"I know." Vance sighed. "That doesn't make it any easier--especially when we can't bring home the bodies. All we can do is have a service for the men we lost..." He chuckled without humor. "Then it's back to the business of trying to survive, in a world we're supposed to be trying to help."

"Yeah." Daws sighed and smiled flatly. "Nobody ever promised us life was gonna be easy."

Vance pushed himself away from the table and stood up. "I think I'll step outside and have a smoke. I... well, I could use a few minutes to put my thoughts together before I talk to Scythe."
Proteus raised an eyebrow. "You're sure you don't want to see the doctor yourself, first?"
The Major gave him an ungrateful look. "Ixnay, Proteus. I told you, that was only a scratch."

Daws glanced up at him with a concerned expression. " 'Only a scratch'?"
Hubert turned from refilling his coffee cup and raised an eyebrow at Vance. "And is your definition of 'scratch' the same one that Miss Dawson and all of your men use, Major?" He asked pointedly.

"It's nothing." Vance folded his arms. "That thug of Tiernan's with the bone blades came at me low. I dodged him, but he caught me along the ribs. I bandaged it back at the farmhouse."
Proteus shook his head. "You took a few seconds to put some tape on it, you mean. I saw, Major. You were busy worrying about your men--but you won't be any use to them if you don't take care of yourself."
"I'm alright," Vance muttered.

"Proteus is quite right, Major." Hubert set his coffee cup aside and folded his arms. "Cadeceus should be done with Blizzard's arm by now -- he had better take a look at you, next."

Vance sighed. "Alright. Fine."
He glanced at Daws, then turned and trudged down the hall toward the exam room.

Daws shot a worried look in Hubert's direction, then moved to follow Vance.
Caddy was just putting the finishing touches on Blizzard's cast when Vance entered the examination room. He glanced up long enough to nod in acknowledgement to Vance (and to Daws, who hung back and leaned one shoulder against the doorframe). Then he turned back to Blizzard with a lopsided grin.
"Okay, you should be set . . . uh, no pun intended. It's not a very complicated break, so I should be able to take the cast off for ya in about five weeks -- so long as you don't do anything screwy to stress the bones while they're knitting."

"It's not like I'm planning on that," Blizzard muttered.
Vance clapped Blizzard on his good arm. "Okay. Go get yourself some coffee--or iced tea, or whatever," he amended, when the cold-loving mutant gave him an odd look. "I'll be out to send everybody back to base in a little bit."
Blizzard nodded and retreated, and Vance turned to Cole.
"I'm being pressured to have you look at a scratch on my side," he said flatly, pulling up his shirttail from the waistband of his slacks.

Caddy glanced in Daws' direction and shrugged. "Okay, Major -- have a seat real quick and I'll give it the once-over. Everybody else but Sid's been taken care of." The physician peeled off his disposable gloves and drifted them towards the trash, snatching a fresh pair from midair and pulling them on.

Vance sighed and sat down resignedly, pulling up the hem of his shirt over the tape that had been haphazardly applied to his ribs. "Just give it a once-over to make Regina and that housemate of yours happy."

"Right." Caddy grasped one edge of the tape and -- with a quick, apologetic glance at Vance -- pulled it off in one brisk motion.
"Sorry, Major." He drifted the tape towards the trashcan, "It hurts worse to pull it off a little at a time, though."
