"That might be a pretty big if." Daws mused. "But Voegel'd definitely be willing to tell Doctor G. things he wouldn't tell us in a million years."

"As long as Proteus could bluff convincingly," Vance observed. "I guess after watching G in action at the clinic, he's got as good a chance as we can hope for."

"As worked up as Voegel is, little differences might slip past without him even noticing 'em." Daws added.

Vance shrugged. "I'll call Proteus before we go back to the motel, and ask him if he's up for it. If he is, he can slip out and meet us, and we can stage our return with our phony captive."

Daws nodded. "It's worth a shot."
She pulled another stack of folders out of the duffel bag and began flipping through them. "Nothing is really jumping out at me so far." She said with a frustrated sigh.

"Not from what I can tell," Vance agreed morosely. "I'm looking for any full name starting with G, too, but I don't see anything. For all we know, he goes by half a dozen names."

"And all of them aliases." Daws agreed glumly. "If he's devious enough to go to work for people like this, he's probably devious enough to do a good job of keeping himself untraceable, too."

"Especially with active government help," Nate remarked.

Daws grimaced. "Yeah, that too."
She scowled at the folders in her hands. "I wonder if Cole really can find someone with enough leverage to stop all of this."

"Not just the leverage, but the guts," Vance muttered.
He glared at the folder in his hands for a moment, then slapped it shut and scowled in the direction of the clinic. "I wish they'd give us an idea what's wrong with the kid already."

Daws grimaced. "Yeah, me too." She replied, setting the folder in her hands aside. "I'm sure they will, the minute they know anything to tell us."
She reached into the bag again, this time withdrawing a lockbox -- one of the pair that she and Vance hadn't had time to open at Voegel's apartment. Daws eyed the flat metal case warily for a moment, then shrugged and withdrew her lockpicks from her pocket. "I guess I might as well crack this open."

Vance scowled. "Be careful. We still don't know if there's anything dangerous in there."

Daws nodded in acknowledgment and set the case on the table, selecting a pair of lockpicks and bending over the task. "I will. Last thing Caddy needs is another injury to attend to."

While Daws was examining the lock on the box, another figure appeared in the living room doorway--that of a somber and weary-looking Alex Malone, who had been at Miriam's bedside upstairs. He regarded the group with a faintly bewildered look.
"Oh... hi." He looked at the abandoned remains of the men's refrigerator raid. "You should've let me know you wanted something to eat."
Vance sat up straight. " 'Lo, Foxy. We didn't know you were here--but I suppose we should've guessed. How's Miriam?"
Alex shrugged slightly. "About the same as when you saw her last. She'll squeeze my hand, maybe move just a little when I talk to her... but I'm still waiting for her eyes to open."
"They will, soon. Believe that. She's tough." Vance regarded the entertainer concernedly. "So are you--but you don't look like you've been taking such good care of yourself. You've lost some weight, and you don't have it to lose."
"I'm fine," Alex asserted demurely.

Daws glanced up skeptically from her lockpicking. "Have you at least been getting some sleep?" She asked gently.

"Yeah. In the chair beside Miriam's bed." Alex smiled emptily. "I've even done my bit at the Paragon a few nights. I can't stand it, but... I owe it to Sid."

Daws smiled faintly. "Just don't forget that you owe it to you to take care of yourself." She said.

"Oh, I'm okay," Alex insisted again. He frowned thoughtfully, and took in more thoroughly the tired, stressed appearance of the group.
"I'm sorry I haven't been any help. What's going on now?"

"It's . . . kind of a long story." Daws spread her hands, indicating the folders that surrounded her. "You heard about the clinic doctor we nabbed from the hospital -- Voegel? This stuff came from his place. Unfortunately, we had a nasty run-in with his boss while we were there."

"Was anybody hurt?" Alex asked anxiously.
Vance grimaced. "Timothy, that parish kid who was with us at the Murfeeston Bridge--you remember him--he got a jolt of some kind of acid or poison or something. The docs are with him now. Seemed okay earlier... but then he got worse."
Alex winced. "Will he be okay?"
"We're still waiting to hear that." Vance wearily took in the stacks of files and lock boxes with a sweep of his hand. "We can only pray this trash is worth it."
