Only a few hours after she'd left Tiernan Enterprises, Regina Dawson found herself back in the familiar lobby. She'd caught a few hours of sleep, and had then stopped by her office (intending on being there just long enough to pick up the mail before she headed for Sid's place). Instead she'd found a message from Nicholas Tiernan's icy blonde receptionist on the machine, to the effect that she'd better get her tail back to Tiernan's office before day's end, reason unspecified.
Which could conceivably mean that Tiernan had blown her cover, and wanted her back so he could ask what would undoubtably be very unpleasant questions. Daws didn't like that possibility -- but she also didn't think it very likely. If Tiernan ever did blow her cover, something told her she'd be "invited" to a much more secluded spot than Tiernan's office -- and in a much more bodily manner.
So, with a brief but passionate curse against her rotten double-agent's luck, she'd locked up the office and headed uptown. Again.
She barely paused to nod at the blonde behind the desk, who gave a vague, disinterested gesture towards the elevators and turned her attention back to her nails. One familiar elevator trip later, Daws knocked at the door of Tiernan's office.
Hearing the now-familiar "Come," she cracked open the door and stuck her head in.
"You wanted to see me?"

"Indeed. Please come in." Tiernan drummed his fingers restlessly against the arm of his chair as Daws stepped in.
"Something new has come up," he began. "And as I believe a few days away from the hunt for Van Linden might allow you to clarify your thoughts on that matter, I want you to give this your attention instead."
He pushed a file folder across his desk. "Are you familiar with a current candidate for mayor named James Marcus Cole?"

Daws half-shrugged and accepted the folder. "Sure, I've heard of him. What mutant hasn't?"
She scratched behind one ear as she opened the folder and added "Why d'you ask?"

"I just had a rather peculiar conversation with Mister Cole not two hours ago," Tiernan replied.
"I'm sure it will be no surprise to you that I more or less 'take a hand' in certain political campaigns. As far as the mayoral race is concerned, Cole is obviously the logical choice for my attention; he's expressed surprisingly pro-mutant views, and in any case, he has an excellent chance of winning. However, after speaking to him, I have certain doubts."
Tiernan rose and paced slowly before the broad windows. "Our conversation was going quite well, until he had a sudden attack of what he described as a migraine. After that, his attitude was rather different--and he did seem eager to leave. I suppose it's quite possible that he was merely distracted by his pain, but... something about the whole affair seemed rather strange to me."
He stopped pacing and glanced up at Daws. "A fellow likes to know more about a horse's track record before he bets on it, Miss Dawson; and I want to know more about Mister Cole. More than there is to be learned in that folder you have in your hands--and I'm quite certain there is more."

"If he's a politician, there's gotta be," Daws remarked, leafing through the folder's contents. There wasn't anything in them that wasn't public knowledge -- Cole's family life, his early career, his recent press statements. She flipped the folder closed and shrugged.
"All right, Mister Tiernan, I'll see what I can turn up for you. Shouldn't be terribly hard, considering it's election year -- if there's muck to be raked about your Mister Cole, it'll be near the surface." She held up the folder. "Can I take this?"

"By all means," Tiernan replied, spreading his hands.
"I've consistently gained a certain influence in the office of the Mayor for a number of years, although not to the same degree as with lesser offices, such as the police force. But it hasn't been easy, considering the last few persons to hold the job have had fairly strong anti-mutant views. This fellow Cole could turn out to be a tremendous benefit to us--but I don't want to encounter any surprises if I do put the man in office."

"Of course not." Daws gritted her teeth at the implications of Tiernan's words; she and her friends had enough to go up against without her 'employer' gaining any more valuable connections. "Okay, Mister Tiernan, I'll get you everything I can find on this James Cole -- includin' how willing he'd be to work with you, if I can." She tucked the folder under her arm and tipped her fedora.
"I'll be in touch with you by the end of the week."

After leaving Tiernan's office, Daws paused on the sidewalk outside to light a cigarette and think.
On the one hand, the sooner she got started, the more she'd dig up on Cole -- including whether he was a friend or a foe of Tiernan's.
"Don't be dumb, Ace." She muttered, "He's a politician. He'll be both, neither, and anything else he pleases all at the same time."
On the other hand, if she was going to be looking in on Cole it might be a while before she had a chance to see Miriam and the others -- and they needed to know about the latest developments in their fight against Tiernan.
On yet another hand, She thought wryly, [/i]I really hope I get the chance to kick the crap outta Vance sometime soon.[/i]
But first things first. She'd been on her way to Sid's place; she might as well finish one project before starting a new one. Daws flicked the cigarette into the gutter, turned up her collar against the stares of passersby, and headed for the nearest subway station.
