All in all, Nicholas Tiernan was satisfied with the morning's events. The Spooks' having betrayed him was a minor annoyance which he'd half-expected, and now that they had tasted the cost of such behavior, he fully expected them to deliver Proteus to him in short order. Indeed, having learned how serious Nocturne was, Proteus might even give himself up to protect his people.
After a brief meeting with one of his numerous attorneys, Tiernan made his way back to his office--and upon opening the door, he immediately noticed that a file from his desk had been moved to the piano bench across the room. With a frown, he started to move toward it...
And the door slammed shut as a figure hidden behind it wrapped a powerful arm around Tiernan's throat, dragging him away from the door.
"Good morning, Mister Tiernan," said his own voice, a few inches from his right ear. "You know who I am... and why I'm here."
Tiernan had lost his poise for only a moment. Even now, with that vise of flesh and bone coiled around his neck, he was once again as cool and impassive as ever.
"I could kill you before you could harm me, Proteus."
"Could you?" A hand was pressed against the side of Tiernan's head, and he felt something like a tingle of electricity. "You might get me--but I wouldn't die alone."
"Under the circumstances, I presume you came here to kill me anyway."
He detected the movement of a headshake. "As much as I'd like to, that's the one thing I can't do... but I can make you suffer, Tiernan. The way my people have suffered, and more. From this moment on, you're going to live in fear of me."
A single, sharp blow was suddenly delivered to the base of Tiernan's skull, plunging him into blackness.
When he awoke, he was alone, and all his startled employees could report was that he had been seen leaving the office half an hour before.
