"Well," Caddy shrugged, "It's not an injection that has to go right into a vein to be effective. You could fit it out into a tranquilizer dart gun and get a pretty useful weapon out of it -- although," he added apologetically, "It'll take longer to work if it isn't an intravenous injection."
"So if we shot someone right when the fight started, we might possibly get some use out of it before the fight was over." Daws shrugged one shoulder. "Don't guess it'd hurt."

Vance cracked a smile at Caddy. "Instead of a tranquilizer gun, a teke like you could throw a whole load of darts at once. There's a few in my group."

Caddy blinked in surprise, then grinned. "Good point, Major. Didn't think of that one. Mother always told me not to throw things at people with my mind, so it didn't even occur to me."
"Yeah, but not everyone had your mother." Daws said brightly.
"Lucky devils." Caddy said with mock envy.

Vance grinned. "I think Miss Dawson can attest to my knack for devising maximum destruction."
"Miss Dawson and me too," Handy sighed longsufferingly.
The Major smiled patronizingly at his satellite, then shrugged. "Well, since I'm not exactly eager to see a demonstration of this drug, I guess that leaves the other one." He glanced at Daws. "You still sure you want to play lab rat?"

Daws took a moment before shrugging one shoulder. "If it'll keep you from doing it and gettin' yourself killed in the process, then yeah."
She shrugged out of her trenchcoat and raised an eyebrow at Hubert. "Whattaya say, Doctor Hubert?"
He chuckled dryly. "I say it's going to be quite the interesting experience finding a vein under all that fur."
"Here." Caddy moved forward, a syringe drifting up from a nearby drawer as he did so. "I've given her injections before."
"Yeah, and as I recall, I nearly clawed your face off last time." Daws replied with a grin, rolling up her shirtsleeve. "I promise not to this time -- if you promise to try and hit a useful spot on the first try."
Caddy grinned. "Deal."

"I don't guess you'd have made it as a veterinarian," Vance remarked dryly to Hubert. Then he glanced at Daws. "If you're gonna claw his face off, just spare his eyes, willya? He'll need 'em if we ever bring him any more 'softball accidents'."

"Ah, you spoil all my fun, Vance." She replied lightly.
"Fun? Fun?" Caddy looked dismayed as he filled the syringe and took Daws' arm, looking for a vein. "Since when is clawing my eyes out fun? Fun for you, maybe."
He finally slipped the needle under Daws' skin and administered the injection. She winced slightly, massaging the injection site as Caddy stepped back and observed her.
"I hate shots." She mumbled.

"I like shots with needles better than shots with bullets," Vance remarked. "But shots with bourbon--now, that's something."

Daws grinned. "Man after my own . . . oh." She stopped in mid-sentence with a quick intake of breath. "Oh."
Caddy frowned and put out a hand to catch her elbow. "Daws? You okay?"
Daws blinked for a moment before nodding. "Okayish, yeah." She looked around slowly.
"Now I think I know what Jai feels like." She added quietly.

Vance stepped close to Daws again with a frown of concern. "Talk to us, detective. What's going on?"

Daws drew a breath through her teeth and leaned back against the nearest counter. "I . . . I'm used to seeing and hearing more than regular people do, but this is . . . " she shook her head and paused for a moment."I can hear the electricity humming in the walls, for cryin' out loud. It's overwhelming."

"Is the light too bright?" Vance asked. The question was motivated partly by concern, and partly by an interest in determining any drawbacks to the use of the drug.

Daws shook her head. "No . . . It's not the brightness, it's the details that're messing with my head. I'm just not used to being able to see this well. Or hear." She raised an eyebrow at Caddy. "And smell -- how much aftershave did you use this morning, anyway?"

Vance relaxed with a faint chuckle. "I could've told you he used too much, detective."

Daws smiled faintly. "Well, I didn't wanna say anything earlier, but now . . ."
"Hey," Caddy protested, "Take it easy on the genius for a change, willya?"
Hubert made a faint, affectionate scoffing noise. "Proud of yourself, aren't you, Cadeceus."
He turned to Daws, frowning in concern. "Miss Dawson, if you'd prefer, we've had some luck with using the second solution as a counteragent to that injection."
Daws shook her head. "No. No sense lettin' this go to waste."

"I guess you boys had better make your tests, then." Vance leaned one shoulder against the wall. "How long does the effect last?"

"Twenty minutes at most." Hubert replied.
Daws groaned. "Great." Then she gave a puzzled frown. "But . . . I'll feel it going by, anyhow. My time sense seems to be just as amped up as the rest of 'em."
She shrugged one shoulder and added "Usually I can tell what time it is without needing a watch -- just a sort of inner clock, something I check when I need to. But right now, it's like . . . I can feel time going by, without checking. It's . . ." she chuckled faintly. "It's weird."
Caddy raised an eyebrow, looking interested. "Well, considering I've got all your medical records, I guess the best thing to do is run some eye and ear tests and then compare them. I've got the equipment for that upstairs."

"You're the doctor," said Vance, straightening from his slouch by the wall. "Let's get them done before it wears off."

Daws grinned faintly. "Been a long time since anybody's come along to keep an eye on me at the doctor's office, Vance." She said teasingly.
Caddy snorted. "Well, maybe someone oughtta start again, if you're gonna keep up this talk of clawing the doctor's eyes out."

"You could always just bandage her hands," Handy pointed out earnestly. Vance gave him a light, scolding smack on the back of the head.
