Daws grinned teasingly at Sid and winked at Tara. "Aw, come on, Sid. We all know you're just waiting for the day when she brings home her own battle-scarred veteran with a talent for settin' stuff on fire."

Sid winced. "I think I got enough on my hands without these kids growin' up."
Tara looked shy. "Actually... your assistant Joey called a few nights ago, and asked if I'd like to go out Saturday."

Daws grinned slowly. "No kidding? What'd you say?"

Tara's cheeks pinkened slightly. "I said yes."
"After I told her where they can an' can't go," Sid interjected, with the natural stress of a protective father.
"We're going roller skating," Tara elaborated. "I used to rollerblade some, but not much anymore. I hope I can still stand up!"

Daws chuckled. "Oh, I wouldn't worry too much about that. I'm sure Joey'll help you keep your balance."

Tara pinkened a little more, and Sid looked slightly horrified.
Miriam surreptitiously winked at Tara, then clutched Alex's hand and gave Daws a smile of beatific innocence. "That reminds me... I've been wondering when we can expect you and the Major to go on a double date with us."

Daws grinned crookedly and ducked her head. "Ah . . . I think you'd have to ask Vance about that one." Then her grin turned slightly wicked and she added "If only for the look on his face."

"I'll remember next time we see him," Miriam replied with a grin.
Sid grinned as well--wickedly. "I'd like ta see ya get the Major in on your cookin' lesson with Foxy. If he's in good enough shape by now ta run around a kitchen, that is."

Daws laughed. "Now there's a mental image. But it's not a bad idea -- he's in good enough shape, all right."

"Maybe we oughta make a date for it, then," Sid remarked. "'Sides, it'll give us a chance ta discuss--what we were talkin' about earlier. Once I've got the details on that."

Daws smiled and nodded. "Sounds like a plan, then. It'll give me something more interesting to do than field weird phone calls." She grimaced good-naturedly. "I think I need to add something to the newspaper ad about how Grimalkin isn't actually a branch of the city pound. I had to tell two different people yesterday that lost pets aren't in the job description."

"That's a hot one," Sid grinned.
Holly looked slightly distressed. "Aw, those poor people. I'd feel awful sorry for them. It'd be terrible to lose a pet... if you had one in the first place."
"The kids are still trying to talk Sid into getting a dog," Alex said with a smile.

"What? You haven't caved yet?" Daws grinned teasingly at Sid. "Your kids must need wheedling lessons, Sid."

"We're working on him," Tara said with a grin.
Sid shrugged noncommitally. "Ownin' pets takes work--an' I don't wanna end up bein' the one stuck doin' it. 'Sides," he waved a hand at Alex, "Foxy here doesn't know if he's allergic ta them too."
"I still have to take Sudafed when you're around," the entertainer admitted sheepishly to Daws.

Daws smiled somewhat apologetically. "Maybe we oughtta look into buying some stock in the company. They'll never go broke so long at that keeps up -- not until you build up a resistance to me, the drugs, or both."

Miriam grinned and leaned on Alex's shoulder. "I've told him it'd be easier to take a shot once a month, but he has kind of a thing about needles."
"A thing." Alex paled slightly. "Yeah, that's one word for it."

"Oh, I see." Daws gave him a sympathetic look. "Can't say I blame you -- I'm not that big of a fan of shots, myself. Caddy can vouch for that."

"So we've figgered all the times we've heard ya threatenin' ta puncture him," Sid replied with a grin.

"Oh, he knows I'd never really do it." Daws replied with a laugh. "It's never a good idea to do actual harm to anyone who can throw stuff at you with their mind."

"I wiss I could do that," Caleb lisped with thoughtful enthusiasm, and there was a moment's awkward silence around the table. Tara looked uncomfortable, and Holly blanched.
