Daws nudged his shoulder. "You know you'll get in trouble no matter how you try to throw stuff at your sisters, kiddo." She joked gently. "Better just get used to that.
"Besides," she glanced at Sid, "Like your dad said, you're growing up fast enough as it is. No sense wishing for anything to happen any sooner than it's gonna -- if it is."

Sid shot Daws a look of slightly pained gratitude, then cleared his throat and smiled at his children. "Finish yer dinner. The ice cream's waitin'."
Miriam furthered the change of subject, glancing at Daws. "We saw Caddy yesterday, in fact. We were serving a meal to the refugees at Our Lady, and he was there to look at the ones who are still getting over their injuries." She smiled. "He was insane as ever. The Spook children love him, though."

Daws grinned. "Oh, yeah, Caddy's great with kids. Probably 'cause he's more or less just a big kid himself, most of the time. I've told him he oughtta try finding a nice girl who'll put up with him and tie the knot . . ." She raised an eyebrow and grinned deviously at Alex and Miriam, "But then, I guess I know a lot of people like that."

Miriam blushed. "There's just so much else to think about."
"Such as?" Sid asked bluntly.

"Sid's kinda got a point." Daws remarked placidly. "Aside from keeping an eye on the Spooks -- which we've got a tolerable amount of help doing -- we really don't have much to think about just at present."

Alex smiled gently at Miriam and put his arm around her. "They're not gonna let up on us, you know."
Miriam raised her eyes, with a smile of affectionate frustration. "You mean you won't."
"You're just cooped up here all day anyway," Sid pointed out. "What difference does it make ta anything else if you're Miss Van Linden or Mrs. Malone?"
"Doctor Van Linden," Miriam retorted, but she was smiling ruefully.

"Hey," Daws held up her hands, "Far be it from me to hassle you into anything. Sid, Vance, and possibly Caddy on the other hand . . ." she shrugged broadly. "Well, there I can't make any promises."

Miriam sighed and stared down at her hands. "I'll think about it," she said demurely.
"Well, that's makin' progress," Sid grinned.
Tara frowned, glancing between her father and Daws. "I don't really understand... I mean, the way things are for Miriam--can you really get married without doing a lot of legal stuff?"
Miriam flushed slightly and ducked her head.

Daws shrugged thoughtfully. "I have a friend who's gotten passports and plane tickets for people without going through the regular channels. I'm not sure why he couldn't do the same thing with a marriage certificate -- sneak it into the records, so to speak."

Alex grinned quietly and hugged Miriam against him; but he didn't press the matter any further, and the others took his cue.
"You kids about done with your dinner?" Sid asked after a moment, surveying the children's plates. "The ice cream's waitin'."
There was a chorus of happy affirmatives from the youngsters, and Sid grinned and stood up. "Okay, then. Clear your plates off the table, an' we'll have Consuela dish it out." He glanced at Daws with a smile. "You want some too?"

Daws grinned and nodded. "Yes, please. You know me and my sweet tooth."

The children hustled the dinner dishes into the kitchen, and a few minutes later they returned with heaping bowls of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Tara grinned as she set one of the bowls in front of Daws.
"Ya want chocolate syrup, or will ya be buzzin' just from that?" Sid asked humorously.

Daws stuck her tongue out playfully. "Hey, I'm a hardworking P.I. who needs her energy, I'll have you know." She retorted. "Pass the chocolate."

Sid grinned and passed across the bottle of Hershey's.
Tara sighed contentedly as she savored her first bite of ice cream, then glanced quizzically at Daws. "Have you gotten in any more swimming practice lately?"

Daws shrugged one shoulder. "A little bit, here and there. Things have been kind of crazy lately and I haven't had the chance -- but I think I'm getting better. Slowly," she grinned, "But I'm getting better."

"That's great." Tara grinned, but then her face fell slightly. "I had to give up the swimming team at school. Too much risk of people finding out... you know." She shrugged sadly.
Sid glanced at his daughter with sympathetic pain, then added, as a reminder to brighten her, "So we're puttin' in a big swimming pool out back in a couple months, b'fore summer gets here." He grinned at Daws, half-apologetically and half-humorously. "So if ya have any grumpy ex-soldiers ta nurse back ta health when the work crew's here fer that, you'll havta take 'em in yourself."

Daws laughed. "I'm sure Vance can keep himself out of trouble for that long, anyway." She paused abruptly, and then added "Okay, that may be overly optimistic on my part. But here's hoping, anyway."

"I wonder when he's leaving Henry's," Alex mused. "Does he still keep a hangout at Roger Latimore's, or has he had to give that up since--uh, you know?" he checked himself abruptly, glancing at the children.
"I don't suppose he'd want to be there with a lot of Spooks staying there, anyway," Miriam said thoughtfully.

Daws frowned thoughtfully. "I don't know what he'll do. Miriam's right -- it probably won't be his kind of place with that many people hanging around. Kind of makes it hard to lie low."

"He could always just move into your office," Alex said with a grin.
Sid gave a slight snort. "I'm sure Joey'd love that."
