Daws winced and wordlessly put her hand on Vance's shoulder.
Caddy nodded sympathetically. "I can understand that. I've dealt with enough bad doctors to know the type."
He sighed and glanced back down at the folder. "There's, uh, more here. Memos and evaluations regarding your test results." He winced. "It's . . . pretty obvious you were being screened as a test subject. But I guess we already knew that."

"Yeah." Vance shrugged moodily. "Does it tell you anything more about exactly what kind of subjects they were after? The more specific we can get, the better we'll know who's at risk."

"Lemme see." Caddy frowned and thumbed through a few more pages. "Adult male in 'otherwise good health'," He made a scoffing noise, "Meaning 'other than being a mutant' . . . age, physical stamina, energy-casting abilities . . ."
He glanced up with a shrug. "You lost a couple points in their estimation because of your age -- no offense -- and because your power doesn't have a natural shutoff. But other than that, you pretty much fit the bill as far as what they were looking for. So I suppose anyone who fits your description fairly closely is at a higher risk."

"Pretty much what we figured." Vance scowled, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I still wonder if we can't find some way to use that. If we can't try to bait 'em somehow."

Daws made a distinctly displeased noise. "Assuming they're still looking for subjects after the last two days . . ." She shook her head. "There's an awful lot of ways that could go really wrong, Jerod."

"There's a lotta ways anything we do can go really wrong," Vance growled. "I'm not dismissing any option we've got."

For a moment it seemed as though Daws would argue the point, but after a pause she merely shook her head and stifled an exasperated sigh.
Caddy frowned. "Well, I'll tell you one thing, Major," He said, "If these people keep tabs on all their potential test subjects as closely as they did on you, we're not going to have much trouble tracking down the rest of the people in these files." He gestured at the folder. "There's at least two addresses here that look like they're from after you were discharged."

Vance scowled and reached for the folder, glaring down at the addresses Caddy had pointed to.
"Yeah. This one's the last place we lived before I was divorced, and the other one is where I went after that. The last place I stayed before I..." He paused, stirring uncomfortably. "Before I had a room in the Bat's basement."
He glanced farther down the page, and his expression grew even blacker. "And this--it's information on Nate's deployments. They were even keeping track of him."
Nate frowned and shrugged. "Maybe they figured I would manifest eventually, if it ran in the family."

Daws scowled. "If they did, they figured right. I guess it's a good thing you joined up with us when you did."

"If there are other possible subjects in these files that we can track down--then we're gonna do that. Whatever else happens, at least we can get 'em out of harm's way." Vance pushed the file back into Caddy's hands. "What else have we got here that we can use?"

Caddy frowned and rifled through the duffel bag with his teke, withdrawing a few folders and giving them a cursory going-over. "Honestly? A lot of this stuff is just flat-out incriminating. The kind of human experimentation these files deal with is really, really illegal -- and even if they're doing it with the tacit approval of someone in the government, well . . ." He glanced up with a shrug. "There's still a lot of people they wouldn't want to see this information."
He glanced back down at the small library of files that were hovering around him. "There's probably more, too -- maybe something more immediately useful. It'll just take me and Hubert some time to go through it all."

Vance nodded, then glanced at Daws. "You'll have to get ahold of Mayor Cole--see what he can do about the 'incriminating' part. And we need to get the computer stuff to Jai ASAP."

Daws nodded. "Caddy, d'you mind sorting the financial stuff out from the rest of this so we can take that to Jai, too?"
Caddy glanced up from his perusal of the folders with a shrug. "Sure. It's pretty clearly marked -- shouldn't take me too long."

While Caddy was sorting out the files, Vance turned thoughtfully to Hubert. "Anything new with Doctor Van Linden? Last I heard, she'd shown a little reaction to Foxy."

Hubert nodded, leaning against the doorframe of the living room. "That's more or less our newest development. She's shown some brainwave activity in response to other stimuli, but nothing as strong as her reactions to Alex."

"I hope that means she's coming out of it," Vance sighed. "We need everybody focused--Sid and Foxy included."
He turned to Handy, Roger, Flash, and Kindle, who had been munching on their sandwiches through the entire conference. "You jokers done stuffing your faces yet?"
Handy looked up innocently, mumbling something unintelligible around a handful of potato chips.

Daws grinned. "I'm going to take that as a no."
Before anyone could reply, there was the sound of a faint, muffled cry from the direction of the examining room. Caddy glanced up sharply, letting the hovering folders come to rest. In the next instant he was on his feet, and both he and Hubert dashed out of the room.

"Timothy?" Vance queried sharply, glancing at the equally startled Daws. Without waiting for any response from her, he bolted after the two doctors.
"What's wrong?"

Caddy and Hubert had both moved immediately to Timothy's side; the young man was hunched over on the examining table, his face contorted in pain.
Caddy glanced up at Vance as medical tools flew through the air to his waiting hands. "I'm not sure yet." He replied grimly, turning his attention back to Timothy. "We don't know enough about what G did to him."

Vance swore quietly and thumped a fist against the edge of the examining table--but he knew better than to interfere with the doctors by asking any more questions.
"Take care of him," he said tersely, and slumped back against the wall, folding his arms and thinking murderous thoughts about Doctor G.
