Caddy nodded tersely, not looking up from his examination. Timothy was gasping for breath, and he had one of Hubert's forearms caught in a white-knuckle grip.
The lavender-skinned scientist had his free hand on Timothy's shoulder, keeping him from toppling off of the examining table while Caddy worked. From time to time he would make some murmured observation, most of which Caddy met with wordless nods.
Daws scowled blackly, lashing her tail as she stood by Vance's side. "If I get my hands on that Doctor G.," She muttered quietly, "I'm going to kill him."

"The line starts right here," Vance said vehemently, clenching his fists.

After a moment Caddy drew off a sample of Timothy's blood and handed it to Hubert. "Run the chem analysis we did on the last sample on this one." He said tensely, "See if we can figure out what's changing."
Hubert nodded and carefully pried Timothy's hand off of his forearm. He shot a gravely concerned look in Daws and Vance's direction as he left the room, heading for the banks of equipment in the basement.
Caddy grasped Timothy's shoulder gently. "I'm sorry," He said quietly, "I know it hurts, but I don't dare sedate you until I know it's not going to make things worse."
Timothy gripped the edge of the examining table, not moving from his hunched position, but he managed a faint nod of acknowledgment.

Vance ground his right fist into his left palm. "I know one thing right now--I'm giving the order to kill G on sight. Even if we ever got the chance, we can't risk taking him prisoner. Not with this."

"No argument here." Daws said with quiet malice. "We can't even run the risk of taking him on in a fight -- especially when you add his guys into the equation."

Vance turned to Nate, who had followed them to the exam room, but stayed unobtrusively in the doorway. "Go tell Handy and the boys about this. Then call Scythe. Have him pass the word about that kill order--because we've got no way of knowing when or where that monster is gonna show up again."
With a grim nod, Nate retreated down the hall.

Daws lashed her tail in agitation, studying Timothy's pained grimace. "I'm going to go through those files," She said quietly, "Sort them out. Maybe . . . maybe there's something in there we can use, something that can help this."

"Not a bad idea--even though neither of us speak medical jargon." Vance shrugged. "But I'll help. We're no use just standing here watching."

Daws nodded and turned to lead the way out of the examining room and back to the living room, where she settled onto the edge of the couch with a sigh and gathered up the circle of folders Caddy had dropped.
"I hate this feeling." She said quietly, scowling at the folders in her hand. "Not being able to help someone."

"Who likes it?" Vance muttered, as he sat down and lifted another stack of files into his lap.
Across the room, Nate was on his cellphone. Handy, Roger, Flash, and Kindle sat in a somber group, their cheerful freeloading forgotten.
"Is the kid gonna be okay?" Handy asked.
Vance sighed heavily. "I don't know yet."

"Caddy and Hubert are doing all they can. The best the rest of us can do is keep out of their hair." Daws scowled and quickly sorted the folders in her hands into two piles -- one medical-related, the other financial. Then she delved back into the duffel bag to withdraw another sheaf.

"I don't understand nine-tenths of this stuff," Vance grumbled, paging cursorily through a medical file. "I don't even think your average family doctor would get half of it."

"Probably not." Daws agreed, setting aside a folder of diagrams that seemed neither medical nor financial. "It's a good thing we've got Caddy and Hubert on our side, or we'd be in trouble with stuff like this."
She sighed. "I'm just looking for anything that mentions Doctor G. -- anything that might help."

"Yeah," Vance murmured. "Maybe that 'personal project' Voegel lifted from G was about something he'd done to himself."

"Or something he did to someone else with those powers of his." Daws answered blackly. "We know these people wouldn't be above doing anything to a person."

Nate scowled. "Supposing G has done any messing with his own powers--maybe he doesn't even know exactly what the effects are."
"I don't even wanna think about that," Vance murmured.

"Me, neither." Daws sighed. "There's too many unknowns in this whole thing for my liking. We don't know what G might've done to himself, what he did to Timothy . . ."
She set aside a small stack of financial folders with a bitter laugh. "We don't even know the guy's name, for crying out loud."

"Hopefully some clue in all this'll give Jai something to trace," Vance sighed.
Nate looked up suddenly, a thoughtful expression on his face.
"I wonder what Voegel would say if he thought we'd bagged G too."

Daws raised an eyebrow at him. "You might have something there." She said. "Cole made it sound like there's not much love lost between them, but that doesn't mean we couldn't use G. to manipulate Voegel anyway. It's worth trying."

Vance rubbed his jaw. "Might even be kind of enlightening to have Proteus put on G's face, then drop him in the room with Voegel and see what happens. If Proteus would agree to it, that is."
