Timothy shrugged. "Not really. After an hour or two it starts getting kind of tiring, but I can't remember it ever having quit on me."
He closed his eyes for a moment and stretched out one hand towards the door, fingers spread.
"There." He said, opening his eyes. "That should take care of everything."

Vance grinned slightly. "That's a nice unobtrusive power, alright. I still kinda envy you."
He glanced at his son. "How's it, Nate?"
"Comin' along." Nate frowned and unfolded a different tool from his pocketknife. "Long as I can do this right, we can get in and out of here without leaving an unsightly scorched hole where the lock is."
The elder Vance nodded. "Yeah--we'd rather not leave any signs of our being here, if we can help it."

"Right." Daws agreed. "Especially not if the cops decide to come back through for another look around. No sense leaving them -- or anyone else -- anything to go on."

Nate continued to work for another two minutes, then straightened and tucked away his knife.
"Okay. I should have it rigged now--the sensor'll just read its own feedback loop, instead of picking up the broken connection when the door opens. Daws, you can go to work on that deadbolt."

Daws nodded and stepped forward, removing a few picks from their case as she examined the lock. "Voegel didn't skimp any on his security budget," She remarked, setting to work, "This is a top-of-the-line number. They market them as 'unpickable'."

"But you're just cynical enough not to believe in advertising," Vance replied wryly.
"If she can't open it, there's nothing to stop me," said Flash.
Vance shook his head. "Nix. You've tired yourself out enough--and if we run into any trouble, we will need you to be up to some more heavy lifting."

Daws grinned. "There's no such thing as a really unpickable lock, anyway. Just locks that take too long to be worth the effort for your average housebreaker -- and we're not exactly your average housebreakers."

"Not that we have all night, either," Vance muttered. "Rog, keep an eye on the elevator and the stairwell. If anybody comes along..."
He withdrew one of Tiernan Enterprises' hypodermic devices from his jacket pocket, and held it out. Roger hesitated for only the briefest moment before taking it.
"Gotcha, Chief," he murmured, and moved off to watch for unexpected passersby.

"Good thing it's a pretty quiet neighborhood, huh?" Timothy rubbed one masked cheek thoughtfully. "I mean, in my building we'd have had a whole crowd of spectators by this time."

"Call it a lucky break," Vance murmured. "That and the fact it's one of these ritzy joints that's unspokenly norms-only. They don't think they have to worry about mutant 'monsters' under the bed in places like this."

"If they only knew what they were living next to." Daws murmured bitterly, still working steadily on maneuvering her lockpicks. "That'd teach them more about monsters than they'd care to know, I bet."

"I don't hold out that much faith in humanity," Vance growled. "I expect most of 'em would probably applaud him."

Daws sighed. "Hate to admit it, but you might be right about that."
She frowned and turned her attention back to the lock. After a few more minutes of determined manipulation, she gave her tools a twist, and the bolt shot back with a solid click.
"There." She stepped back with a satisfied grin. "So much for 'unpickable'."

"Okay, everybody in." Vance pushed the door open, and ushered the group inside, then turned to bring Rog from down the hall. After a moment, the two men followed the others into the apartment.
"Whatta we got here?" Vance asked, looking around alertly.

Daws turned from her own examination of the apartment's front room and small kitchen. "Looks like your average well-to-do bachelor's place." She said. "My guess is most of what we're after is going to be in the study -- probably down the hall."

"Let's check over the whole place anyway. I don't wanna leave any surveillance devices lying around, if there are any." Vance cast a quick glance around. "And nobody use names while we're in here--just in case there's any recorders we miss."

"Right." Daws scanned the bookshelves flanking the television in the living room -- interested not in Voegel's choice of reading, which seemed to run heavily to military history, but in any hidden cameras or microphones that might be tucked away among the shelves.

Vance turned to Timothy. "Can you point out any of those gadgets you picked up on that you weren't sure about? I want a look at 'em."

"Oh . . . sure." Timothy cocked his head slightly to one side and moved to the far corner of the living room, crouching down to withdraw a small, apparently homemade device from underneath the couch.
He frowned thoughtfully at the trio of blinking lights along the top. "Not sure what this is supposed to be."

Vance grimaced at the gadget, but before he could speak, Nate moved over and very gently lifted it out of Timothy's grasp. "Let me look it over."
With a nod, the Major left his son to examine the device, and moved down the hall toward the study. "Anything interesting here?"
