Daws glanced up from examining the few papers on the desktop and nodded at the security camera tucked in one corner near the ceiling. "Some pretty tight security, for starters -- the windows are wired, and it looks like the safe is, too. Shouldn't be a big deal so long as they're all on the signals we know about, but I figure it can't hurt to double-check."

"We'll get Specter in here to look 'em over when he's done checking out some other gizmos." Vance put his hands on his hips and jerked his head toward the desk. "Anything worth mentioning in that stuff?"

Daws shook her head. "Nothing's jumping out at me. This looks mostly like personal documents, bank accounts and power bills and so on. We might be able to put some of it to use, but it's not the jackpot -- Voegel's probably too paranoid to leave anything really useful out in the open."

"Yeah..." Vance turned as Nate stepped into the room. "You figure out the dingus in there?"
Nate shrugged. "Not really, but I made sure it isn't gonna blow up--or send a signal to anything that can blow up. What else have we got?"
Vance nodded to the camera, and then the safe, and Nate's grin was apparent even behind his mask.
"Ah, the main course... 'Scuse me." Nate moved over to the corner beneath the camera. As he was studying it from every possible angle, his specter lumbered in--and after the young soldier had apparently satisfied himself, the solid shadow stretched upward and snapped the camera off its bracket.
"Thanks," Nate said pointlessly, taking the broken camera from his specter's hands. He then set it on the desk, and methodically proceeded to gut it.

Daws grinned at Vance. "He's useful to have around."

Vance smirked. "This is why I didn't get mad when he took things apart as a kid..."
"Most of the time," Nate chimed in over his shoulder.

"Smart parenting." Daws chuckled and tugged open one of the desk drawers -- and her chuckle abruptly broke off into a low whistle.
She lifted a heavy automatic pistol out of the draw and set it gingerly on the desktop. "Voegel doesn't mess around when it comes to artillery."

"Wouldn't surprise me if he walks around with one under his coat," Vance muttered. He picked up the gun and removed its clip, then held it out on the flat of his palm. "Specter, kindly break the gentleman's little toy."
Nate did not look up from the innards of the surveillance camera, but his specter plucked the gun out of the Major's grasp, and twisted it between both hands. Although not snapped in two, it was left decidedly bent, while a few of its moving parts broke off and scattered on the desk.

"Yikes. Remind me to stay on the specter's good side." Daws remarked, turning her attention back to the desk drawers.
"Looks like more of the same here." She remarked, pulling out the first drawer's contents and spreading them across the desktop. "Bank deposit book -- Jai might be able to get some use out of that, if Voegel's conducted transactions with anyone interesting."

"Remember, no names," Vance murmured.
Nate shrugged and straightened from bending over the remains of the camera. "Not to worry about this machine, at least. It's good and wrecked. Now I'll see what the safe's got on it."
He moved over to the safe, and proceeded with another thorough examination of it--particularly a few discreet wires that protruded from it.

"Don't tell me -- the good doctor's got the thing wired to blow if the wrong person meddles with it." Daws said, continuing her methodical ransacking of the desk drawers. "It'd be in-character for him."

"I don't know yet. At the very least, he's got a security alarm on it." Nate followed the wires around to the back of the safe, taking out a penlight to examine the space between it and the wall. "Your friend might have the signal blocked, along with all the others--or it might have a hard line. Gimme a minute."

Daws shrugged one shoulder. "Hey, if taking your time means not getting us caught or blown sky high, then by all means -- take your time."

Roger appeared in the doorway, and dropped a bunch of keys on the desk for Vance's inspection.
"I found these hanging on a hook inside one of those cabinet-things--what do they call 'em, armoires? Dunno what they go to, but I figured they might turn out useful."

Daws glanced up at the keyring. "They might, at that. The bottom drawer here is locked. I was gonna pick it -- but might as well try the subtle approach first, right?"

"Have at it," Vance murmured.
Roger grinned. "The rest of us are raiding the fridge, if you want anything."

Daws grinned. "I wouldn't say no to a cold drink. Picking locks is thirsty work."
She snagged the ring of keys and began looking through them for a match to the desk drawer. "This job isn't without its perks."

"In a perfect world, I could stand a less illegal job without perks," Vance sighed. He looked as if he was about to say something else--but then he paused and turned his quizzical attention to Nate, who had produced a cigarette lighter from his own kit of tools and was flicking it to life. "What's that for?"
"To melt a wire instead of cutting it." A flame sparked from the lighter, and Nate grinned in satisfaction as he carefully eased it behind the back of the safe. "Little trick I learned... Long story."

Daws watched with interest, momentarily pausing in her perusal of the keyring. "I think there's quite a few things about breaking and entering I could stand to learn from you one of these days." She said, in a faintly admiring tone.

"And 'long story' implies this wasn't part of your Army training," Vance remarked.
Still watching the progress of the flame, Nate chuckled, with a touch of awkwardness. "Not exactly... but it happened on base, if that counts."
Roger sauntered back in, to place a bottle of water on the desk in front of Daws. "Sorry, but that's about all Voegel's got in there besides coffee. I guess he's got other things than food on his mind, but that guy's gotta have the blandest diet in the world."
