Character's Name: Grace Duval (born Grace Doughty, but changed her name for the stage).
Mutant Nickname: Ghost.
Mutant Power: Grace has the ability to dissolve herself into a mist-like form. In this form she can seep under windows and doors, compress herself into small spaces, and in calm wind conditions she can drift up to heights far above the ground.
Occupation: Chorus girl, bit player, and occasional solo-act singer/dancer at the Paragon Club.
Gender: Female.
Age: Twenty-nine.
Height: 5' 7".
Hair Color: Platinum blonde, of medium length.
Eye Color: Blue-gray.
Physical Description: With her svelte figure, long legs, and pretty face, Grace is everything one expects of a dancer, although perhaps not utterly outstanding as starlets go. She has a soft Southern accent, which she may or may not subdue while performing.
Country/Hometown: Savannah, Georgia, USA.
Immediate Family: Parents, several siblings, and assorted extended relatives back in Georgia.
Personality: Grace maintains the image of a sweet, fluttery Southern belle, but beneath that exterior is an earnest young woman who worked hard to get where she is. In spite of her name and her dancing talents, she is a little bit klutzy at times. She's not a genius, but she is sensible and kindhearted.
Weaknesses: Having neglected her ability for several years, Grace is out of practice at dissolving into her mist form. When she does, she can hear well, but her vision is reduced to a faint blur; she must rely on touch to move about. She must be very careful in windy weather, because strong winds could carry her away, or possibly even scatter her to the point of killing her. The longer she remains in mist form, the more difficult it becomes to reintegrate herself--and there is a point of no return, after which she would simply fade away.
Additional Skills: A talented dancer, and a good enough singer to perform solo on occasion.
Hobbies/Interests: Grace is somewhat of a "girly girl". She is largely preoccupied with the intricacies of shopping, dating, and flitting about with her social circle of other girls from the Paragon Club.
Personal History: Grace is the eldest daughter of a large, wealthy, socially prominent family, which counts in its history several notable Confederate officers during the Civil War. Her early years were privileged and happy, and the pretty cheerleader was the most popular girl in school. With dreams of becoming an actress, she took lessons in acting and dancing.
At age seventeen, she began dating a handsome high-school football hero, but his frequently drunken advances soon became too aggressive for her comfort. When she rebuffed him, he tried to assault her... and her mutation first manifested. She melted out of his grasp in her newfound mist form, and escaped.
Terrified by the discovery that she was a mutant, Grace expected the boy to expose her to the entire community (although he was in a drunken confusion over her escape, and afraid of his own actions being revealed anyway). Unable to bear the thought of facing her family, she ran away, and at length found her way to New York. Through hard, drudging work, she managed to establish herself, but the lights of Broadway enticed her to pursue her old dreams.
Grace began to look for work as a performer, and her sweetness and Southern charm served her well. Although most producers and directors did not regard her as lead material, she slowly built up her career as a chorus girl. When she reestablished contact with her family, they were upset at first by her allegedly having run away to seek her fortune in show business, but she was able to reconcile with them without revealing her nature.
At the age of twenty-six, she began working at the Paragon Club. She soon felt at home in its energetic, familial atmosphere, and enjoyed Sid's generosity in giving her chances to take center stage. However, her mutation is a secret she rarely even acknowledged to herself; she would not use her ability, and did her best to forget that she even had it.
When mob boss Tony Comancini made an aggressive advance on her, Grace instinctively used her powers to escape him. The act was witnessed by Alex Malone, who revealed his own mutant nature to her, then introduced her to the resistance against Nocturne. Grace hesitantly volunteered to be part of the movement, and began practicing the use of her powers.
Anything else:
Grace's slight case of klutziness appealed to Foxy Malone. He taught her to play it up for comedy purposes, and she became a favorite "fall gal" of his on the stage. In the past, other members of the Paragon staff tried to play matchmaker with the pair, but they have merely maintained a platonic and good-humored friendship.
