Daws nodded. "Yeah. I'll be brushing dust outta my fur for a week, as it is."
She unlocked the door and cracked it open, glancing cautiously out into the alley before stepping outside. "Looks like the coast is clear."

Joey warily followed Daws out into the alley.
"What are we supposed to do now?" he asked. "If the place has had some kinda trouble already, they'll be looking out for anybody else poking around."

Daws frowned. "Yeah, they will be -- and we definitely don't want these people to know we're poking around. Especially not if they're in a jumpy mood."
She sighed moodily. "All the same, I'd like to know exactly what that vandalism entailed . . . not to mention who did it."

"Maybe one of Tiernan's people could tell you," Joey mused. "You know he's even got spies in with the police."

"Yeah, maybe." Daws sighed and shrugged one shoulder as they reached the street. She glanced out from the alleyway for a moment, then nodded back at Joey. "Everything looks clear from here."

Joey breathed a tremendous sigh of relief, rubbing the side of his jaw. "Gosh, that was nerve-wracking..." He grinned wanly at Daws. "If I keep hanging around you, I'm gonna be gray by the time I'm twenty-five."

Daws grinned wickedly and gestured to her fur. "Hey, I was gray before I was twenty-five. It's not all that bad."

Joey rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "Okay, so if we don't want to get caught hanging around here after somebody else already has, have you got any ideas what to do next?"

Daws frowned thoughtfully. "Head back to the office, I guess. That's where Jai will call when -- if -- he finds anything useful for us. That place is pretty much the only physical lead from that stuff Tiernan gave me -- the rest was mostly aliases for the phony 'scientists'.
"I might call Bell back and have him try running those down -- but Jai'll probably get them quick . . ." Her voice trailed off as something in the gutter caught her eye, and she stooped to retrieve it.
"Hunh." She examined the brightly-colored piece of paper for a moment. "I think I might have figured out what our vandals were up to."

Joey craned his neck to peer over Daws' shoulder. "What is it?"

Daws held the flyer up so Joey could see what was written on it:
BURN THE CURE
The members of the Mutant Citizen's Front demand an immediate end to all anti-Mutant activity, including work on the terrorist 'cure'.
This is your only warning. Burn the Cure, or we will.
MCF
"Charming." Daws remarked dryly. "Nothing like a little 'revolutionary' activity to make regular people even more afraid of us."

"Oh, great." Joey grimaced and rubbed his forehead. "All we need is more crazy outsiders getting into things... You think Jai can trace anything from that note, or would you need more of a scientist for that?"

Daws shook her head. "Jai might be able to track down some more about this 'Mutant Citizens' Front', especially if they've got an FBI file of something.
"But the flyer itself," She shrugged and tucked it into her coat, "Looks like the sort of thing pretty much anyone could do with a copy machine and some time on their hands -- which is probably about what this MCF's resources amount to, if I had to guess."

Joey frowned. "Nobody at Our Lady would be mixed up in something like that, would they?"

Daws shook her head slowly. "I dunno. I like to think most of 'em have more sense than that -- but I guess it's possible. It seems like something that some of the Spooks might get caught up in. I'll have to ask Proteus."
She lashed her tail moodily. "Either way, I don't like it. These MCF people don't know what they're meddling with -- and they could get themselves, or us, in some serious hot water if they try to interfere with the Mount Bliss people's little ruse."

"And not just from those people or the cops, either," Joey mused grimly. "If Tiernan hears about 'em, he could get annoyed at having 'em in the way... or maybe he'd even try to use 'em. I dunno which'd be worse."

"Neither do I -- but there's not much we can do to prevent either, at this point. Tiernan's people in the police department are sure to let him know about this development."
Daws grimaced. "If we can figure out who these MCF people are, or where to find 'em, before Tiernan gets to them, then I'll take a shot at warning them off of this particular project. Not that they're likely to listen."

"Yeah, I'm kinda imagining something like our party with the Spooks the night we met." Joey shook his head and grinned fatalistically. "Just lemme know what I can do to help out."

Daws grinned crookedly and nodded. "Sure. Like I said -- for now, I guess we head back to the office. Not a lot else we can do, at the moment."

"You going to call Jai and add this MCF to his grocery list?" Joey asked.
