Daws nodded. "Yeah -- as if he didn't have enough to try and track down. If these are normal tactics for them, though, then Jai shouldn't have too much trouble finding out about them. Subtle it ain't."
She rubbed the back of her neck. "I'll call Proteus, too. Like I said, the Spooks might know something more about these MCF guys -- like how to track 'em down and warn 'em off."

"That'll be fun," Joey quipped. "I dunno, though... the Spooks aren't exactly activists. I'm not sure they'd want anything to do with a bunch like this."

"Maybe not." Daws agreed, "But they might've at least run into them -- or run them out of Spooktown at some point. Besides, Proteus knows a lot of stuff that the Spooks don't."

"I guess that's true." Joey paused, then gave Daws a crooked smile. "So when are you gonna spring this news on the Major?"

Daws groaned and rolled her eyes. "I guess I'll add him to the list of people I've got to call. I'm sure he'll be just thrilled to hear about this latest snag, too."

"He can get to know what it was like for you and the parish folks when he showed up," Joey retorted.

Daws snickered as she led the way onto the subway train that would take them back to the office. "Yeah. Turnabout's fair play, and all that."
She leaned back in her seat with a sigh. "I hope these guys don't turn out to like playing with explosives as much as Jerod does, though."

"What kinda 'vandalism' do you think they were up to?" Joey asked. "I mean, I don't guess these science creeps called the cops just because they found a coupla leaflets. What did the MCF really do back there?"

Daws shook her head. "Dunno. Broke the windows, maybe, or spray-painted the place. I doubt they did anything more destructive than that, or there would've been a lot more black-and-whites there."

"Well gee, that's helpful," Joey muttered. "Just letting 'em know somebody's onto 'em! I can't believe anybody who knew what all this is about could be that dumb."

Daws nodded. "That's why I doubt any of these MCF people have any idea what they're actually dealing with -- and why we need 'em out of our hair. If they didn't even bother looking into what they were up against before they started antagonizing it, then they're really not the sort of people we need on our side for this one."

"Or..." Joey frowned. "You don't think there's any crazy reason these scientists would've staged it all, do you? Maybe for an excuse to get extra security, or something..."

"Or publicity." Daws frowned and withdrew the leaflet from her coat, examining it again. "It's one way to get themselves mentioned in the papers -- ahead of when they were planning on announcing the 'cure', granted. But maybe that's their way of making the thing look more legit."
Daws sighed and shook her head. "I dunno. We keep ending up with new variables." She grinned weakly. "Sort of a career hazard, apparently."

"Maybe I oughta mention I hated puzzles as a kid," Joey grinned self-deprecatingly. "My mom always ended up putting 'em together."

Daws grinned. "Me, I just had kind of a habit of flipping to the back pages of mystery novels when I got too impatient for the solution. I hate an unsolved mystery."

"I don't think we've got a back page on this story yet," Joey remarked dourly.

"Nope." Daws replied as the subway came to a halt at their station. "In real life, you've gotta work out the mysteries the old-fashioned way."
She shrugged and stood, pushing her fedora back. "Guess I shouldn't complain -- it pays the bills, after all."

Joey squinted at her slightly.
"Yeah, I guess being a volunteer member of the whole secret underground resistance movement thing really puts you in a new tax bracket..." He made a face. "Unless you're talking about what you get from Mister Tiernan."

"Nah -- I'm talking about the honest detective work I manage to get done when we're not tryin' to save the world. As for the other," Daws grimaced. "I don't like to think about taking Tiernan's money any more than I have to."

"At least it's money he's not using for... other things." Joey grinned crookedly. "It's kinda funny in a way, I guess. He takes his money from regular humans, and uses it to try to kill them--and then he turns around and pays some of it to you, when you're trying to stop him."
